4 Introduction to the Module Module aims to introduce students to HRM function & role in people resourcing & retention, to consider how this has developed over time in changing contexts, & to consider implications for effective & fair people resourcing & retention strategies, policies & practices Module is designed to meet the learning outcomes of the CIPD Intermediate Module Resourcing & Talent Planning.

5 Module Learning Objectives 1. Explain role of HR function & its role in carrying out recruitment of suitable candidates & retention of effective employees in changing & evolving labour markets; 2. Demonstrate knowledge & understanding of current employment legislation & ethical professional practice issues pertinent to the HR role in recruitment & retention

6 Module Learning Outcomes 3.Design and implement effective recruitment and retention strategy, policy and practice appropriate to different settings; 4.Evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches and the requisite HR skills to design, implement and review effective recruitment and retention strategy, policy and practice in different settings.

7 Module Teaching Methods This module is taught via a mix of: Formal lectures, Workshops Tutorials Workshops and tutorials are participative classes Some of these support your assessments

8 Module Assessment MIX OF COURSEWORK/EXAM Coursework/continuous assessment (60%) Final exam (40%) Students require overall module mark of 40% to pass, & with a mean mark of not less than 30% in each main category of assessment CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT ELEMENTS Group Research/Individual Research Report – 40%; Appended Self-Evaluation Matrix – 10% Brief Individual Reflective Report - 10%

12 Workshops and Tutorials Workshops and tutorial sessions begin in week 1 Tutorials follow on from lectures/are participative –E.g. Case studies, academic writing, referencing, activities Students will often be required to prepare work for workshops and tutorials as they are designed to: –Aid learning/underpin your performance –Aid progress in your assignment work –Aid your exam performance Attendance is required at all lectures, workshops and tutorial classes Students must explain and provide evidence for absences from all classes Staff have to record attendance/report non-attendance

13 Module Summative Assessments Research Report/Self-Evaluation Matrix (50%) Individual report on the group research activity on A) recruitment, B) selection or C) retention issue is due at start of your lecture in week beginning 24 th November: –Paisley Daytime students – upload to turnitin by 9pm on Wednesday 26 th November Individual Written Assignment (10%) Brief reflective report (c. 750 words) –Upload to turnitin by 9pm on Wednesday 17 th December Full assessment briefing for the group report/group evaluation and individual report will be available on moodle

14 Formative Assessment Activities Workshops provide the opportunity for shared group work and discussion on your individual research report assignment + For class discussion topics, oral progress reports/tutor advice and comments Tutorials provide the opportunity for group work on useful activities, discussion, tutor comments + Groups will present a formal progress report/receive tutor advice and comments: –Group A - week 6 (week beginning 3 rd November) –Group B - week 7 (week beginning 10 th November) –Group C - week 8 (week beginning 17 th November)

15 Workshop 1 Any initial questions about module? Students should introduce themselves to others sitting right beside them –Spend 10-15 minutes talking with each other about the introduction to the module –If you identify questions or anything that needs further explanation, please raise your hand to get the lecturer’s attention and ask your question(s)
