The Marathon: Exercise Gaming Bike Quang Bui, Derrick Newsome Advisors: Dr. Paul King, Dr. Marshal Summar Problem Statement Our sponsor, Marshall Summar, proposed that we make a device that required children to perform some type of exercise while they played video games. Background Existing Products and Cost Project Design Goals Cost and Pricing Acknowledgements Conclusions Require exercise to function Integrate video games Useable while sitting Burn 100 calories per 35 minutes 20 minutes of moderate dancing 12 minute jog in place Costs Optical Sensor Set$3 Microcontroller$2 Relay$2 Circuit Board, wire, etc$6 Playstation 2 Extension, RCA Video Extension$1 Bike Manufacturing$30 Retail Mark-Up$35 Total$80 Parents Try to reduce game play of their children Can not motivate their kids to do physical activity Lack affordable solutions Pediatricians Lack the solutions to the problem Notice an increasing trend in patients who spend their time playing games Children Do not get enough exercise and become overweight Excessive sedentary video game play Spending an increasing amount of time in front of the TV, Computer, and Video Games. Supporting Facts Obesity Obesity is often a result of social, behavioral, cultural, physiological, metabolic and genetic factors. Children often become prone to health risks such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension due to obesity. In % (12.5 million) of children and adolescents in the US between the ages of 2 and 19 were obese. (JAMA 2004) Each year the percentage of overweight children and adolescents increases. Physical activity is an important factor in preventing obesity. Video Games and TV Children, ages 8 to 18, spend 44.5 hours per week in front of computer, television, and game screens; more than anything except sleeping 42% of children play one hour per day 22% play for two or more. The average child spends three hours a day watching tv on top of this 15% of children feel they play too much 26% say they play too little 9% admit it sometimes hurts their homework. (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2006, 11th Annual MediaWise® Video Game Report Card) Parents of children who are overweight, addicted to gaming, or don’t exercise enough. Pediatricians who advise parents Fitness Centers and Daycares To target this audience this product will be designed and marketed to parents at an affordable price. The product will have an unlimited amount of games to keep children’s attention. It aims to be effective enough to be recommended by pediatricians and utilized by Fitness Centers and Daycares. Integrate Pedaling as exercise Disconnect Tv Video after 3 seconds of inactivity or poor activity Compatible with all Game Systems, DVD Players etc. Output: Calories, Distance, Speed Tamper Lock system Warning signals when little or no activity Design Features Market Sensor Disk Optical Sensor Disconnect Features 50 RPM – Green LED, Connected – Yellow LED, Screen Blinks 0-40 – Red LED, Video Disconnect Idling reduces rpm to 0 in 3 sec. Our goal for this project was to make a cheap affordable solution to this problem without sacrificing quality and durability. With very little spent on the materials used to make the device we figure that most of the costs will come from the labor process of developing the bike. From analyzing the costs of the materials we used we averaged that the bike itself costs around $25 but the labor put into manufacturing the device averages about $40. So we plan on selling our product at a price of $70 to provide an affordable price. Existing Products that integrate Exercise and Gaming Exer-Station Flex a metal bar to control direction. Limited to xBox360, or last-gen systems. Retail Cost: $1, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Dance on a pad with 4 arrows to music. Limited to dancing games. Retail Cost: Game: $50 Pads: $ The Cateye Interactive GameBike Bike PS2 only, racing games only. Retail Cost: $ Nintendo Wii Very Limited Library of games that emphasize exercise. Retail Cost: Games: $50 System: $250 The Marathon product fills in a void in the attempts to connect exercise and gaming. The Marathon is designed to work with all Next-Gen gaming systems and before. It also is useable with almost any game created with the exception of a handful (DDR). It’s small size, low price, and effectiveness at requiring exercise without distracting game play make this product suitable for most families whose children need more exercise. Special Thanks to: Marshall Summar- Associate Professor in Pediatrics and sponsor of our project Ken Roberts- Experienced Engineer and MBA student in the Owen School Paul King- BME Professor and advisor of the project Daniel Hooper- Electrical Engineer/Vanderbilt Alumnus ‘05 McGillites- provided feedback and helped test the device Be compatible with most game systems Be small, easy to buy, design for homes Not be limited to certain game genres
