3 Concerns Personal safety and responsibility.- thinkuknow. Too much screen time ‘Dr Aric Sigman - Health Education researcher/lecturer: ‘…average 7 year old will spend a year of 24 hour days watching recreational screen media.’ ‘Over the course of childhood, children spend more time watching screens than they do in school.’ LRS Year 6 School surveys in part reflect his research.

4 Concerns The French, Canadian and Australian governments banned 9(or strict guidelines for) TV content aimed at under 3 years old. Taiwanese government require parents to monitor their children’s screen time. Fines of £1000 can be applied for excessive use. Academic impact – Cambridge University researcher; ‘Those spending an extra hour a day on screens saw a fall in GCSE results equivalent to two grades overall.’

5 Health implications linked to excessive screen time and inactivity: Obesity Type 2 diabetes Cardiovascular heart disease

6 Social impact Over dependency with screen leads to a delay in social develop. Inappropriate gaming/social media can develop unhealthy perspectives of the world. A lack of real life experiences. Using screens at night time emits ‘blue light’ which wakes up the brain and can lead to sleep deprivation. Attention problems have been sighted by excessive screen time.

7 So what can we do? Limit screen time No screen time up to the age of two 2 – 5 years olds no more than one/two hours a day 5 – 18 years no more that two hours a day A balance of educational/reactional use Be role models for our children with social interaction Challenge your family to go 1 week without screen time!
