June 22, 2011 CINEMA Status

GENERAL NOTES 10 UCB students currently on CINEMA team, 12 visiting students from Korea arrive starting , 2 Engineers from Puerto Rico Collaborating Institutions Imperial College London (ICL) Kyung Hee University, South Korea (KHU) Interamerican University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory CEA Saclay (France) CINEMA manifested on ELaNa 6 (OUTSat/L36) Payload Readiness Review early Nov 2011 S/C Delivery late Nov/early Dec 2011 Atlas 5 Launch at Vandenberg June 2012

Electrical Power Progress Flight-Like Solar Panel survived TVAC test -60C to +90C Harnessing for Solar Panels has been designed and is being tested Currently measuring self-discharge of the non-flight battery 5V bus monitored to show stability during charging/discharging of battery Issues Need a technician or outsource to load components on panels Concerned about battery shelf longevity (6 months) Self-discharge curve shows that the non-flight battery will not maintain charge well Dropped from 7.4V to 5.7V in less than a month Battery may be too old to give representative data Next Steps Find technician/vendor to finish loading solar panel components Battery bakeout to simulate flight conditions Cycle batteries to prolong their life Testing the flight battery to see how it behaves during normal operations

Spacecraft Structure Progress Chassis flight design will be finished this week Issues Last interferences being found. Impossibilities in assembly being found. Next Steps Fabricate Flight Chassis Make a rotisserie fixture to hold the satellite and allow for easy rotation.

STEIN (SupraThermal Electrons, Ions and Neutrals) Particle Detector Progress Collaboration with LBL on FPGA, ASIC, and detectors ongoing ICD v1.0 is complete FPGA coding has begun Layout for all 3 STEIN Boards completed, boards ordered. New intern student from France working on the detector and ASIC Minor mechanical redesigns complete Work on STEIN FSW and IIF modules now active Issues A lot of work needed with interface of STEIN and the rest of the spacecraft Next Steps Updated code and hardware to interface with new design Build STEIN circuit boards

MAGIC (MAGnetometer from Imperial College) Progress Raw MAG data provided by Imperial College Issues Need MAG calibration matrix for CINEMA Need code for telecommand calibration Need data converter/formula to transform raw data Next Steps Ship sensor housing and harness to Imperial College Test FSW/MAGIC

C & DH Progress Defined an initial set of ground station commands Working on FSW MAG module, Commands Computer for GSE work designated Almost fully incorporated ACS Simulink model with FSW Issues Need to know format for any ground station communication Do not currently know how to send more than 2-byte commands Next Steps Finish last modules of flight software Testing of Flight Software Fully incorporate FSW and ACS Finalize a list of all ground station commands Determine format & uplink procedure for ACS ephemeris data Include a way to reprogram PIC after launch

Radio Communication Progress Working on final modifications for flight model of UHF Antenna Deployer TVAC for S-Band Transmitter system Successful assembly and testing of UHF Antenna Signal connection Receiving Assistance from Wallops on NTIA Application Issues Waiting for NTIA Application response Next Steps Finish NTIA Frequency Assignment Order the rest of the equipment required for our ground station

ACS Progress Flight Sun Sensor done (4 th version!) A/D circuit for sun sensors defined and tested Torque coil structure redesigned to lower external height on S/C Simulation software now includes the effect of Earth’s static albedo on the solar panel power Ongoing integration of ACS with housekeeping FSW Issues Possible effect of Earth’s albedo on solar panel-driven ACS being studied Perform both Detumble and Spin Up in a random location/orientation with only onboard information (no ephemeris) Need to accelerate simulation and serial loop to run in real-time Next Steps Test new torque coil design Fabricate and Build Torque Coil Flight Models Investigate the determination for the sun position under effects of albedo with CINEMA’s geometry at one instant Test different sampling times and modify the communication loop

Thermal Analysis/Env Progress KHU working on Thermal Documentation Planned TVAC for S-Band Transmitter and DC/DC converter next week (first thermal test beyond solar panels) Issues Disagreement between two thermal models of the Magnetometer and Boom Next Steps Review Mag/Boom thermal models

Miscellaneous Found additional workspace Long lead on Actel Dev board (12 Weeks!) Solar Panel soldering possibly helped now with pre-tinning technique Elana 6 Environment harsh : 6 months w/out power followed by 6 up to 70 C. Still waiting for ULA description of that environment.
