March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 20115 Hardware Implementation: Baseline STEREO SWEA Design see Mechanical and Electrical Design Presentations

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 20116 MAVEN / SWEA IRAP ( formerly CESR ) instrument team Christian Mazelle (Lead Co-I) Jean-Jacques Thocaven (PM, Electronics) Jean-André Sauvaud, Dominique Toublanc (Co-Is) Jean Rouzaud (Mechanics, Environmental tests) Andrei Fedorov (Detector simulations, Calibrations) Philippe Rouger (Electronics) Eric Lecomte (Integration, Coating) Qiu Mei Lee (Documentation) David Moirin BTS Industrie (Quality Assurance) TBD (CNES Technical Assistance for AIT) starting in April. Claude Aoustin (former CESR Technical Manager, expert) punctual assistance by Jean-Louis Médale (retired; expert on electronics) CNES can bring expert persons on request (components, EMC…)

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 20117 MAVEN / SWEA Stereo Swea instrument basis Instrument SWEA : design already flying on STEREO Engineering model available @ CESR / IRAP for tests Calibration facility available @ CESR / IRAP Most of Stereo technical team expertise available Stereo Swea data analysis team feedback All tools available for Maven/Swea instrument fabrication Same companies are in charge of Maven instrument fabrication (electronics, mechanics, environmental tests) Maven Swea fully funded by Cnes at least until 2016

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 20118 Models philosophy Stereo: Two engineering test units (one delivered to SSL) Two flight models Spare parts (not assembled) Maven: One engineering unit Stereo upgraded (not delivered) One flight model Spare parts (not assembled)

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 20119 Heritage IRAP (formerly CESR) has a long heritage of successful hardware collaboration with SSL: ISEE, GIOTTO, WIND 3D-P, MGS, CLUSTER-CIS, STEREO Instruments lifetime very often largely overshooted the baseline: WIND, MGS (9 years instead of 2), CLUSTER-CIS (more than10 years of operation now), Mars Express, Venus Express

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201110 SWEA: status Cnes contract: to deliver same instrument as for Stereo (limited funding and manpower). Heritage from stereo in flight data. Better understanding of the instrument. Minor h/w modifications implemented on Maven SWEA. Minor changes only deal with: - geometrical factor and energy resolution at low energy. - improve low energy response. - interfaces with SSL. - improve reliability (higher screening than for Stereo for some electronic parts). see Stereo to Maven changes Presentation

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201111 SWEA: Work progress and next term activities Contractor for mechanical parts is the same as for Stereo (COMAT). Mechanical elements can be integrated when parts coated with black Nickel are back from SSL to IRAP beginning of April. Detectors (MCPs): one pair has been delivered March. 2010 another pair (spare) to be ordered soon All electronic parts have been delivered. PCBs are fabricated in ESA qualified manufacturer Amp board finished, HV coupling and HVPS in progress. Implementation of AIT facility @ IRAP for Planetary Protection started begining of 2011 (see presentation by D. Moirin). Issue: delay of commands due to start of IRAP.

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201112 IRAP AIT/AIV Schedule

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201113 Reference documents  MAVEN SWEA Performance Assurance Plan (v2.0, june 2010)  MAVEN SWEA UCB to IRAP Interface Control Document (last update 4/03/11)  MAVEN PFP performance requirement  MAVEN PFDPU to instruments ICD  MAVEN – UCB Mission Assurance Implementation Plan (MAIP) and other PA related documents (D. Moirin)  Maven harness specifications  Maven grounding specifications  Maven latchup LET criteria (tech. Note - UCB)

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201114 AIT documentation As built lists (materials, EEE parts, processes) As built assembling procedures Environmental testing reports (if any) Log book Non conformity reports with appropriate corrective actions Photographic documentation of FM hardware Analysis reports (mechanical, electrical, …) Tests reports to be delivered by IRAP to SSL

March 28, 2011 MAVEN SWEA instrument Pre-CDR Peer Review @ IRAP March 28-29, 201115 FUNDING STATUS French participation to Maven SWEA selected by CNES in 2006 for a very limited cost: 250 k € Mars Scout 2011 delayed by NASA to 2013: → Implications: - Cost increase (sub-contractors, components, general…) - Manpower: Technical PM (JJT) became involved in another project (ExoMars) -> 50 % FTE only from end 2008 → Electronics engineer engaged (new contract): P. Rouger. Product Assurance/Quality Assurance: mandatory to utilize independent PA/QA personnel to satisfy all requirements specified in the MAIP and MAR. → strong implication on funding (for Stereo, QA was ensured by the CESR PM). New level of funding negociated with CNES is ok for activities up to delivery. Contract of P.R. ensured until mid-2012.
