Windows File Sharing Options Homegroup Public folders Using the Sharing Wizard Advanced Windows file sharing can be a bit confusing as there are a number of options. In this section we will look at the following options

Method 1 Homegroup Sharing Homegroup allows a SOHO network to share libraries with other computers that belong to homegroup. –Documents, Pictures, Music, Video, Printers. –Other computers only given Read access Homegroups must be created using Windows 7 Home premium or later. –Other computers can join the homegroup, but home basic additions cannot share their libraries.

Creating a Homegroup To join or create must be on “Home” network type –Change from Work using home network troubleshooter Right-click Network and select Properties Click HomeGroup in lower left of screen

Access Permissions Control what a user can do with shared resources Simple Share permissions: –Read –Change –Full Control By default Homegroup computers have only Read access to Shared Libraries –Can be changed through special process NTFS Permissions are at the file level and control access to a file by user account. –Work at both local computer and through a share

Method 2 Using Public Folders By default located in C:\Users\Public Files in Public folders are shared with all users when using a Work or Home network. –Users have Change permissions. Can be turned on or off from the Profiles window. Network Discovery must be on for the network profile in order to see other computers

Profile Sharing Options

Accessing Public folders from Network Network Discovery must be on Access files in Public folders –Open (double-click) Network –Double-click computer from Computers section –Open Users You will see folders for same user name on that computer –Open Public –Access desired Public Folder

Method 3 Using the Folder Sharing Wizard You can share other folders by using the Sharing Wizard –Turned on by Default Right-click folder to be shared and then click the Share with option. Select Sharing Option

Specific People Option Use to share a folder based on username. –Must create user account on server and assign a password Select User account and then click Add Assign desired permissions

Accessing Shared Resources Network Discovery ON Open Network window Select Computer that contains the shared folder If you do not have the same user account information on the server computer, you will be asked for a user name and password to log on. Open the shared folder.

Advanced Sharing Allows more control of sharing options and permissions. Requires turning off the sharing wizard –Open Windows Explorer –Click the Organize menu option –Click the Folder and search options link –Click the View tab –Scroll down and remove the check mark from the Use sharing wizard (recommended) option

Advanced Sharing Step 1 Create user accounts with passwords that will access the shares –Right-click Computer and click Manage –Click to expand Local Users and Groups –Click Users –From the Action menu, click New User –Enter user account information including Password settings and click Create

Advanced Sharing Step 2 Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder to be shared and then right-click the folder and click the Share with… option. –Note the options have changed as a result of turning off the Sharing Wizard Click Advanced sharing … to display the Share tab of the Properties window.

Advanced Sharing Step 3 Click the Advanced Sharing button to display the Advanced Sharing window. Click the Share the folder check box. Note you can add additional names and comments for the shared folder

Advanced Sharing Step 4 – Users and Permissions To setup who can access the share, click the Permissions button. Change or remove Everyone Click Add to display the Select User or Group window

Advanced Sharing Step 5 – Add User or Group Click the Advanced button Click Find Now button to display a list of all users and groups Click the User or Group and then click OK. Click OK again to return to the Permissions window

Advanced Sharing Step 6 Set the Permissions for the User or Group. Repeat to add additional Users Click OK to save changes Click Close to close the Properties window. The folder is not shared with the selected users. Sharing folders with Groups is more efficient. Accessing the folder is that same as when using the Sharing Wizard
