1 Lesson #10 MCTS Cert Guide Microsoft Windows 7, Configuring Chapter 10 Configuring Network and Firewall Settings

2 Chapter 10 Objectives Understand How to Configure Network Settings, Including Wired, Wireless, and Internet. Understand How to Configure Windows Firewall to Specify Types of Traffic Allowed on Your Network.

3 Configuring Networking Settings
Network and Sharing Center Provides One-Stop Location for Configuring Settings. A Network Already Set Up Can Have Its Location Changed Through Set Network Location. Set Up a Connection or Network Wizard Offers Network Connection Options: Connect to the Internet. Set Up a New Network. Manually Connect to a Wireless Network. Connect to a Workplace. Set Up a Dial-Up Connection. Set Up a Wireless Ad-Hoc Network.

4 Set Network Location User can change the location of a network that is already set up.

5 Set Up a Connection or Network Wizard

6 Connecting to Existing Networks
Use Connect to a Network Option in Network and Sharing Center. Manage Connections to Networks Previously Set Up. Can Connect or Disconnect from Network.

7 Network Sharing and Discovery
Sharing and Network Discovery Options Accessed from Network and Sharing Center. Advanced Sharing Settings Enables User to Configure Sharing Options for Different Network Profiles: Network Discovery. File and Printer Sharing and Public Folder Setting. Media Streaming. File-Sharing Connections. Password-Protected Sharing. Homegroup Connections. These are advanced sharing settings, and are additional networking options. Network Discovery enables your computers to see other network computers. Turned on by default. Media streaming enables machines on the network to access shared photos, videos, and music. File sharing connections enables you to select the strength of encryption used for protecting file sharing connections. Password protected sharing requires users to have a password. Turned on by default. HomeGroup connections enables you to determine whether Windows will use simple homegroup-based sharing or use classic file sharing.

8 Internet Connection Sharing
Used by Small Office or Home User. One Computer Acts as the Router to the Internet. Internet Computer Needs Connections for Modem and Network Adapter. Broadband Connection Requires Two Network Adapters – One to Connect to Broadband Device and One to Connect to the Network. Windows 7 ICS components consist of Auto-dial, DHCP Allocator, DNS Proxy, and Network Address Translation. ICS is a simplified form of Network Address Translation. ICS can be used to share any type of Internet connection. Prior to configuring ICS, ensure that no computers have IP Address , because the network adapter on the ICS computer is assigned that address.

9 Network Connection Dialog Box
Displays All Available Networks:

10 Local Area Network (LAN) Settings
On an ICS Client Computer: Problems with ICS should be checked in Event Viewer System log.

11 Connecting to Wireless Networks
Windows 7 Supports b, a, g, and n. Set Up Wireless Network Through Network and Sharing Center. Can Set Up New Network, or Connect to a Network Previously Set Up. Table 10-2 provides details on each of the four protocols.

12 Manually Connect to a Wireless Network Page
Settings include Network name, Security type, Encryption type, Security Key, Start this connection automatically, Connect even if the network is not broadcasting.

13 Available Wireless Security Types
Table 10-3

14 Managing Wireless Connections
Manage Wireless Networks in Task List in Network and Sharing Center. Can Modify Order in Which Windows Connects to Wireless Networks. Can Connect to More Preferred Network if One Is Configured. A Wireless Network Profile is set of wireless networks available to a given user on a Windows 7 computer. The two types are Per-user and All-user. Can also use the netsh command to manage wireless network profiles.

15 Customize Settings Enables You to Turn Firewall On or Off

16 Advanced Security Snap-In
Advanced Security snap-in enables you to perform a comprehensive set of configuration actions. Configure rules affecting inbound and outbound communication and connection security rules. Can also help prevent other users from downloading.

17 Multiple Firewall Policies
Configured in Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Domain Profile Specifies Settings When Connected Directly to a Domain. Private Profile Specifies Settings When Connected to Private Network. Public Profile Specifies Settings When Connected to an Insecure Public Network.

18 Configuring Notifications
Display Notifications When a Program Is Blocked from Receiving Inbound Connections:

19 Chapter 10: Summary Network and Sharing Center Is Starting Point for Configuring Network Settings. Internet Connection Sharing Allows One Computer to Share Internet Connection with Multiple Computers. Wireless Settings Allow Connections to a List of Wireless Networks with Different Types of Wireless Security. Windows 7 Firewall Allows or Disallows Inbound or Outbound Traffic. Firewall Can Be Configured to Display Notification When a Program Is Blocked from Receiving Inbound Connections. Next Lesson: Chapter 11, “Configuring Access to Local and Shared Resources”
