Biotechnology Department Salt Lake Community College

The Salt Lake Community College Biotechnology Program Initiated in August year A.A.S. created 1-year high school program

Six wet labs, computer lab, cell culture facility (approximately 50% of this space is shared with Jordan School District) 2 FT faculty 50 college students; 65 graduates Approximately 10 dual credit/concurrent credit high school programs 4-year transfer option The Salt Lake Community College Biotechnology Program

High School Program Partnerships One year, open to juniors or seniors Developed at the same time as the college program >10 high schools > 500 high school students Emphasis on hands on, problem-solving Concurrent enrollment credit

UVU built a new degree on SLCC’s existing 2 year degree UVU agreed to offer enough upper division credits on SLCC campus so that students would not need to commute The degree includes a requirement for at least 10 cr hours of internship/independent research The UVU Partnership

The SLCC Biotech Pipeline High School Program (Do I care?) AAS or AS Program Adult Learner (Can I do it?) Biomanufacturing Program Development Funded by a $1.9+ million Dept of Labor Community-Based Job Training (CBJT) grant awarded to SLCC Newly retrofitted facilities at Granite Technical Institute include : Wet & Dry labs Clean room : Class 100,000 / ISO 8, or better High tech instrumentation lab Engineering / machine shop

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Complements SLCC’s Biotechnology Technician AAS program and AS transfer program Provides practical workforce training for biotech manufacturing setting Supports highly diverse Utah biotech industry (main sectors: natural products/dietary supplements, medical devices, pharma)

BIOMANUFACTURING: CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION DIPLOMA & AAS First academic certificate (for SLCC & high school students) 2 semesters / 30 credit hours total Provides the foundational knowledge and skills for entry- to mid- level associate / technician positions in PRODUCTION, QUALITY, and PROCESS DEVELOPMENT job families General understanding of quality systems and federal regulations Basic critical thinking skills for troubleshooting / problem-solving o Diploma : +1 semester / 47 credit hours total o AAS : +2 semesters / credit hours total Provides advanced knowledge and skills relevant to the biotech manufacturing industry
