The Periodic Table of Elements 1

Elements Elements are a PURE substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances. The elements, alone or in combinations (COMPOUNDS), make up our bodies, our world, our sun, and in fact, the entire universe. 2

3

Metals 4

Periodic Table Metals appear to the left of the dark ziz-zag line on the periodic table. 5

Properties of Metals Metals have luster. This means they are shiny 6

Properties of Metals Ductile metals can be pulled into a thin wire. 7

Properties of Metals Malleable metals can be hammered/ pounded into sheets 8

Properties of Metals Metals have a high melting & boiling points. 9

Properties of Metals Conductors Metals are good conductors of electricity and heat 10

Properties of Metals A chemical property of metal is its reaction with water and oxygen. This results in corrosion and rust. 11

Nonmetals 12

Properties of Nonmetals Nonmetals occur to the right of the dark zig-zag on the periodic table. Although Hydrogen is on the left, it is also a nonmetal because of its physical and chemical properties . 13

Properties of Nonmetals Nonmetals do not have luster; they are dull. 14

Properties of Nonmetals Brittle Nonmetals are brittle so they break easily. This means nonmetals ARE NOT ductile or malleable. 15

Properties of Nonmetals Many nonmetals are gases at room temperature. 16

Properties of Nonmetals They also have a low melting point. This is why they are poor conductors of heat and electricity. 17

Metalloids 18

Properties of Metalloids Metalloids can be found clustered around the dark zig-zag line that separates metals and nonmetals. 19

Properties of Metalloids Metalloids (metal- like) have properties of both metals and nonmetals. 20

Properties of Metalloids Metalloids are solids that can be shiny or dull. 21

Properties of Metalloids They conduct electricity and heat better than nonmetals but not as well as metals. 22

Properties of Metalloids Metalloids can malleable or ductile. 3rd period 23

Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Has a metallic luster, but is brittle. 24

Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Has a metallic luster, but is brittle. METALLOID 25

Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Good conductor of heat and electricity. 26

METAL Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Good conductor of heat and electricity. METAL 27

Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Semi-conductor. Conducts heat and electricity under some conditions. 28

METALLOID Metal, nonmetal OR Metalloid? Semi-conductor. Conducts heat and electricity under some conditions. METALLOID 29
