1 Properties of Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids
Physical Science

2 Make sure that you included the following on your graphic organizer

3 Physical Properties Metals
Malleable – able to be hammered into thin sheets Ductile- able to be drawn into thin wires Luster- shiny Good Conductors of heat and electricity. Most are solids except for Mercury

4 Chemical properties of Metals
Corrosive-react with oxygen and water React strongly with acids but not bases Form ionic bonds Tend to react with nonmetals

5 ALKALI METALS group 1 Valence electrons- 1 Good conductors
VERY reactive so they are never found alone

6 ALKALINE EARTH METALS Group 2 Valence electrons- 2
Not found as free elements in nature Uses: Mg in white fireworks, Strontium in red Calcium Phosphate in your body keeps bones strong

7 Transition Metals Group 3-12 Occur as individual elements
Form colored compounds: cobalt= blue cadmium=yellow Magnetic- ____iron____, __nickel_______, __cobalt______ Copper, silver, gold- stable and malleable so we make coins with them

8

9 Make sure you included the following in the nonmetals section of your graphic organizer

10 Physical Properties of Nonmetals
Poor Conductors of heat and electricity Luster: very dull Brittle solids Most are gases at room temperature

11 Physical Properties of Nonmetals
Low density Low melting point Hard or soft Various colors

12 Chemical Properties of Nonmetals
Tend to react with metals Form ionic and covalent bonds

13 halogens Group 17 VERY reactive

14 Noble Gases Group 18 Stable, nonreactive b/c out energy level is full- inert

15 Physical Properties of metalloids
Metalloids have properties of both metals and non-metals. Can be shiny or dull Semiconductors- conduct heat and electricity better than nonmetals but not as good as metals Where? Zig Zag-line

16 Physical Properties of metalloids
Solid at room temperature Can be ductile or brittle Can be malleable or not
