Vocabulary To Know Element- a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means Pure substance- a sample of matter, either a single elements or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties Metal- an element that is shiny and conducts heat and electricity well Nonmetal- an element that conducts heat and electricity poorly Metalloid- an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals
Properties of Elements Each element has a unique set of properties They DO NOT depend on the amount of the element present. Properties include: boiling point, melting point, density, and reactivity with acid
Categories of Elements Metals: Shiny and good conductors of heat. Examples- Lead, Tin, and Copper. They are malleable and can be hammered into thin sheets. They are also ductile and can be drawn into thin wire. Nonmetals: Dull and poor conductors of heat. Examples- Sulfur, Iodine, Neon. Solids tend to be brittle and unmalleable. Metalloids: Shiny or dull, and semiconductors because they have properties of metals and nonmetals. Examples- Boron, Silicon, and Antimony. Some are malleable and some are ductile.
