New York

New York City is a city in the southern end of the state of New York, and is the most populous city in the United States of America.

New York City has the highest population density of major cities in the United States. The New York metropolitan area, with a population of 18.8 million, ranks among the largest urban areas in the world.

Harlem Another feature of New York population is the vast number of Negroes living in Harlem, which is the most densely populated section of the city. The houses in Harlem are in worse conditions than anywhere else, yet rents are higher than in any other part of the city. Manhattan Manhattan (pop. 1,593,200) is the most densely populated borough of New York City and home to most of the city's skyscrapers.

Times Square is at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Times Square consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan. Smaller than Red Square in Moscow or Trafalgar Square in London, Times Square has nonetheless achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and has become a symbol of its home city. Times Square is principally defined by its animated, digital advertisements.

. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, stretches 1825 m over the East River connecting the Manhattan and Brooklyn. On completion, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first steel-wire suspension bridge. The bridge cost $15.1 million to build and approximately 27 people died during its construction. A week after the opening, on May a rumor that the Bridge was going to break down caused a stampede which crushed and then killed twelve people.

Wall Street is the major financial centre of the U. S. and symbolizes the money market and financiers of the U.S. Wall Street was called so because of a wall which extended along the street in Dutch times. It was built about 1650 from river to river (the Hudson and the East River) to protect the small colony living south of this street from attacks by Indians. Later the wall was removed, but the name remained.

Federal Hall Federal Hall has been the seat of New York's municipal government since 1811.

The Trinity Church (1897), the Federal Hall, National Memorial (a museum of the colonial and early Federal periods in New York), the New York Stock Exchange and the biggest banks of the USA are situated here.

The Chinatown is an ethnic enclave with a large population of Chinese immigrants, similar to other Chinatown districts in American cities. By the 1980s it became the largest enclave of Chinese immigrants in the Western Hemisphere. By 1870, there was a Chinese population of 200. By the time the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was passed, the population was up to 2,000 residents. By 1900, there were 7,000 Chinese residents, but fewer than 200 Chinese women.

Central Park This huge park in the middle of the city was designed in the 1850s by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Central Park was opened in On the park's east side, along Fifth Avenue wealthy New Yorkers built their mansions.

Central Park is a large public park (3.41 km). With about twenty-five million visitors annually, Central Park is the most visited city park in the United States, and its appearance in many movies and television shows has made it among the most famous city parks in the world. Central Park contains several artificial lakes, extensive walking tracks, two ice- skating rinks, a wildlife sanctuary, and grassy areas and playgrounds for children. The park is a popular oasis for migrating birds.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is a preeminent art museum. It is regarded as the leading museum of modern art in the world. Its collection includes works of architecture and design, drawings, painting and sculpture, photography, prints and illustrated books, film, and media

New York Skyscrapers

The most beautiful and famous of the skyscrapers of that period are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. The most beautiful and famous of the skyscrapers of that period are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Building rises to 381 m at the 102nd floor, and its full structural height (including broadcast antenna) reaches 443 m. The building has 85 stories of commercial and office space and an indoor and outdoor observation deck on the 86th floor. The remaining 16 stories represent the spire, which is capped by a 102nd floor observatory, and atop the spire is an antenna topped off with a lightning rod. The Empire State Building is the first building to have more than 100 floors. It has 6,500 windows, 73 elevators and there are 1,860 steps from street level to the 102nd floor. It has a total floor area of approximately 254,000 m².

On September 11, 2001 the highest building in Manhattan collapsed after the terrorist attack on the WTC, when two planes were hijacked and flown directly in its Twin Towers. Over two thousand people were killed in this terrorist act.

The «Big Apple», as New York City is nicknamed, has an energy that few other cities can equal. More ships come into New York's harbor than into any other port in the world. John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of the busiest in the world.

New York can be called the financial capital of the world. The United Nations has its headquarters in Manhattan. The city is a leading manufacturing center. Its chief industries are clothing, printing and publishing.
