3 HISTORY Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano explored this region in 1524. in 1609 English sailor Henry Hudson explored the area the first European settleres were the Dutch – in 1614 (they also bought Manhattan form the Indians for $24 ) in 1669 the city was seized by the English and was renamed NEW YORK.

4 Basic facts O located in New York State, on the eastern coast of the USA O most populated city in the US - 8000 000 inhabitants O Important seaport, financial, business and cultural centre O nicknamed 'Big Apple' or 'the city that never sleeps' O made of 5 boroughs: Manhattan, The Bronx, The Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond

5 The Statue of Liberty a gift to the United States from the people of France, was dedicated in 1886 and remains a symbol of freedom. Standing more than 300 feet tall from foundation to torch, the statue weighs more than 225 tons and draws 5 million visitors each year.

6 Manhattan Modern layout – avenues run from south to north, have names, streets run from east to west, have numbers Is situated on a rocky island between the East River and the Hudson River Its name comes from an Indian name man-a-hat-ta meaning heavenly island. Famous places are the Fifth Avenue, Empire State building, Broadway, Times Square, Wall Street,

8 Empire State Building O 381 m + 62 m pinnacle 102nd floors - 85 stories -offices observation deck on the 86th floor. The remaining 16 stories represent the Art Deco tower,capped by a 102nd-floor observatory. O skyscraper built in 1931 O built in Art Deco style O currently the tallest building in New York City and New York State (April 2010)

10 O in Lower Manhattan O the first permanent home of the New York Stock Exchange O financial centre of the world O its name derives from the 17th century when Wall Street formed the northern boundary of the New Amsterdam settlement - built to protect it from Indian attacks O The first American president George Washington was inaugurated here.

11 Brooklyn Bridge O built over the East River to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn - for both cars and pedestrians O completed In 1883 O 486 m long main span – the longest until 1903

13 Broadway O a wide avenue running through Manhattan, continues to Bronx, Almost 20 km long O dates to the first New Amsterdam settlement O centre of American theatre Industry – 33 theatres, Metropolitan opera, cinemas, restaurants, clubs and bars Broadway and 38th Street

15 Times Square O centre of entertainment at the junction of Broadway and 7 th Avenue O many department stores, shops, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels O named after the former buildings of the New York Times Newspaper O lots of colourful neon and LED signs and advertisements O nicknamed 'The crossroads of the World' - iconic symbol of the city Samsung JumboTron on the facade of Two Times Square identifying the New year.
