HISTORY Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano explored this region in 1524. in 1609 English sailor Henry Hudson explored the area the first European settleres were the Dutch – in 1614 (they also bought Manhattan form the Indians for $24 ) in 1669 the city was seized by the English and was renamed NEW YORK.
