SHARP/VPP Conference-within-a-Conference Wednesday, September 17and Thursday, September 18, :00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The 2nd Annual “SHARP/VPP Conference will be held in conjunction with the Chicagoland Safety and Health Conference on September 17 and 18, 2008 in Naperville, IL. This Conference is specifically designed for companies interested in pursuing safety excellence through OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) or Illinois Consultation’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP), as well as companies who have achieved these certification milestones. We invite you to learn from the “best of the best” on how to make safety excellence a reality in your business. Wednesday Activities What participants said about the first SHARP/VPP Conference “….The most creative and energizing meeting …really got our attention! “ “I have learned SO much and am ready to start the process.” “Overall, very good, organized seminar.” 8:00 – 9:00 Meet & Greet. This session provides you the opportunity to interact with a select group of companies that have achieved safety excellence, as well as others looking to invest in their future. 9:00-10:00 VPP & SHARP Process Learn about the process for safety excellence. Approval into these programs earn OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health. Upon acceptance, your worksite will be exempt from programmed inspections. 10:00 – 11:00 SHARP/VPP Testimonials Here is an outstanding opportunity to learn what has been successful in “real world” situations. Safety excellence is achievable and this conference can jumpstart your journey towards that goal! 11:00-12:00 Get Acquainted with the OSHA Meet our Area Directors. Ask questions and get answers! We’re promoting a non- adversarial relationship and want to increase the trust between government and business. For any sound relationship to work, we must eliminate the fear. 12:00-1:00 Lunch 1:00 – 4:00 SHARP Application Workshop 1:00 – 4:00 VPP Application Workshop For those who are interested in taking that next step, the Application Workshop will guide you through the process. Take advantage of this opportunity to hear from officials and industry leaders on what it take to develop and complete a successful application.

Thursday Activities 8:00 – 11:00 Conversation Café with Tom McDunn “If you can change the conversation, you can change the world.” The Conversation Café is a creative dance of conversations and questions and is both a method for creating a living network of collaborative dialogue and a metaphor for noticing how we are already co-evolving our future together. Structured as a coffee house meeting, four individuals sit at a table and facilitate connections to answer critical questions to generate innovative possibilities for action. 11:00-12:00 Jerks at Work with Mike Mastroianni & Norm Dasenbrook Mike and Norm will take us through the way to harness the power of conflict by changing ourselves and others; recognizing conflict styles and provide tips for dealing with problems and level with others and alternative ways to resolving disputes in a win-win strategy 1:00 – 4:00 Best Practice Awards Great news… the Best Practices Awards are back! This is your chance to share your successes, learn how other SHARP and VPP companies improved their safety and health programs, and be recognized. To participate in this unique event, your Best Practice must be submitted by August 1. For more details, contact Nancy Quick at What they say about belonging to the SHARP or VPP Program: “As a result of participation, our site has a comprehensive safety and health management system that has consistently improved over the years with emphasis on the total involvement of both management and our employees. Through the efforts of all employees, the facility has continued to experience injury and illness rates well below the industry average." "At the plant, we are 100% committed … By following the guidelines, we find it easy to reach our safety and health objectives. It is a tremendous asset to have OSHA models to follow to promote a good safety program." For the workerFor the employer Statistical evidence is impressive. The average program worksite has a Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART) case rate of 52% below the average for its industry. These sites typically do not start out with such low rates. Reductions in injuries and illnesses begin when the site commits to the SHARP/VPP approach to safety and health management and the challenging application process. Fewer injuries and illnesses mean greater profits as workers’ compensation premiums and other costs plummet. Entire industries benefit as VPP sites evolve into models of excellence and influence practices industry- wide.
