19 Alice Paul ( ) Alice Paul ( ) Alice Paul was born on January 11, 1885 in Moorestown, New Jersey

20 Alice Paul realized early in her career that to make changes in society, it takes a strong leader who has determination and powerful strategies. Paul provided just such leadership for the woman suffrage movement.

21 She received a Ph.D. in social work (University of Pennsylvania) and trained in militant tactics from British suffrage leaders. Later Paul joined the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA).

22 She began by putting on a parade in Washington, D.C., to draw attention to their honorable cause. The parade was scheduled to coincide with the inauguration festivities for President Woodrow Wilson. This resulted in near riots.

23 Paul and others Relentlessly pursued legislation that would add a woman's right to vote to the Constitution for the next seven years.

24 Paul left NAWSA and formed a political party, the National Woman's Party, that campaigned and demonstrated. Party members picketed the White House and ended up behind bars, where they continued their protest with a hunger strike, until officials force-fed them.

25 In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment, allowing women the right to vote, was finally added to the Constitution. Before her death in 1977, Alice Paul helped orchestrate enormous changes in the rights and status of American women, exemplifying a strong and determined leader.

26 Following adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, on August 26, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment.
