 -Britain did not experience racism in the same way the United States did. There were certainly issues in Great Britain in regards to race, but they weren’t felt musically as they were in the United States  - while racial tensions delayed the bluesy sound of the American south from becoming popular, and then caused all kinds of controversy once it did reach the centre stage of American entertainment, Britain was listening to the blues  -many young British musicians greatly admired the blues musicians of the American south and emulated their sound in their own music.

 -while Elvis, Holly and Jerry Lee brought their black sound to American airwaves, several young British bands were gaining popularity on their own side of the Atlantic with the black sound The Quarrymen

 -why were The Beatles so popular?  -the baby boomers were all around 13 years old, so there were more 13 year olds in the western world than ever before, and 13 year olds love new and exciting music  -The Beatles first big hits were written by black musicians eg: “Twist and Shout”  Their approach to Rock’n’Roll was the refreshing change this relatively new form of popular music needed  But there’s more…

 John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the primary writers  Their love of Blues and Rock’n’Roll combined with their love of “showtunes” created a formula  after hours of performance in Hamburg working this formula and practicing their craft they got pretty good  - at one time held 8 of 10 top ten songs, during a period where they had the number one song for over 18months

 Beatles played Toronto 3 times between 1963 and  My mother saw all three.  The last time took place on Aug 17 th 1966, (her 17 th birthday)

 The Beatles took some time off.  For 18 months, they leave the studio, give up the movies and stop playing shows.  They would never go on tour again actually

They went to India

 -after having such enormous success writing “pop songs” they returned with new and challenging sounds. “Strawberry Fields Forever” is a good example. What changes can you here?

 -their changes accompanied the change of age of values the baby boomers experienced from 1963 to Their fans grew from 13 to 19. Their values and interests changed accordingly  -the Beatles now wrote songs with more adult themes and social statements eg “Black Bird” written about the struggle of black women in America and the world

 -the Beatles earned the love of millions of young teens. The band and their fans grew together.  Their breakup was difficult for their fans to understand.  Yoko Ono took a lot of undeserved blame
