10 What is 'popular music' Popular music can be described as
“any, of a number of musical genres having a wide appeal". It is typically distributed to large audiences through the music industry. It is different to both art music and traditional music, both of which are usually distributed orally to smaller, local audiences. Although popular music sometimes is known as "pop music", the two are very different. 'Popular music' is a generic term for music of all ages that appeals to popular tastes, and 'Pop Music' is a specific musical genre of music.

11 The Charts The charts measure the popularity of a record by the number of copies it has sold in a given period, usually a week. A record gets to number one because it has sold more copies than any other record over a specified time.
