Please bear in mind I have DELIBERATELY changed the context so you CANNOT just copy this. In addition I shall be heartily annoyed if you presume to copy and think I won’t notice.

Candidates will identify the purpose and intended users of the multimedia product, describing briefly at least one scenario in which it will be used. Sailors and Sailing will be a multimedia product for beginner sailors and those interested in learning the basics of how to sail. It will cover the content of the RYA course, “Day Skipper” It could be part of a distance-learning theory package, with the practical elements assessed separately, so it could be a CD/DVD or an online product. I will design it as a CD/DVD because this means the user doesn’t have to have Internet access. Video and audio will help learners who find text hard to digest, and use of interactive diagram animations and colour with a clear layout will ensure that this is accessible and non-threatening

They will provide a basic description of the content and key features. Content & Key Features: Navigation – using satellite and ‘old fashioned’ techniques of pilotage, boat handling both inshore waters and confined spaces (such as the marina), seamanship and skippering techniques including consideration of passage planning and weather, preparation and safety at sea, maintenance, health and safety responsibilities including ‘Man Overboard’ procedures and Collision Regulations

They will identify how the audience and purpose has affected the choice of content and key features. Content & FeaturesAdjustment to suit audience & purpose Content: NavigationWill NOT look at history of navigation beyond a quick context because they’re not THAT interested: will focus on basic satnav and stars in inshore waters because they’re not far enough advanced to look at serious oceanmaster work. There will be video of using some kit so that they can see as well as practice themselves. Chart work will be videoed too so they can see how to use the rules Content: Boat handlingWill cover some night work so they are less likely to get caught as they return home from day sailing, but they’re not likely to choose much night work so this will be awareness only. Close quarters work in the marina is a MUST because everyone has to do that bit. Some of this will be videoed because some awareness of when NOT to sail is important too.

They will identify how the audience and purpose has affected the choice of content and key features. Content & FeaturesAdjustment to suit audience & purpose Content: Seamanship & SkipperingBasic skills of leading a team; provisioning a boat; coastguards; Rules of the Sea all to an operational rather than expert level. A video on crew meetings showing how an effective crew operates will help the user understand what is needed. Content: Health & SafetyThe skipper is responsible for the safety of all on board, so sea-based first aid, collision and overboard procedures are an absolute MUST regardless of their intentions on the water. First aid procedures will be videoed but users will be reminded that these are only to be practiced with supervision!

They will provide a brief outline of points that can be used to measure the effectiveness of their final product Effectiveness will be measured in two ways – 1 Quantitative: I will check that all interactive elements function as required, using a test plan that I shall prepare in advance. 2 Qualitative: I will ask novices and experienced sailors to review my work and tell me how accessible/ useful/ valuable they consider it would be. I will include a short quiz at the end of each section which will help users see what they have learned. The quiz will provide feedback when answers are incorrect, to include where the user should return to find the correct answer.
