Avalanche Rescue Beacon Online Training Sara Kalantari Denny Lau

Overview 1.The Barryvox Beacon 2.Current training Manual CD-ROM 3.Modification

ABCD Audience: Anyone who wants to use an avalanche beacon when traveling in the backcountry in snow covered areas, including but not limited to backcountry skiers and snowboarders, snowmobilers, snow-shoers, ice-climbers, mountaineers

ABCD Behavior 1.Increase in Awareness 2.Demonstration of Planning Skills 3.Progress in Performance

ABCD Conditions Learners will need the following equipment for taking this course: 1.Computer with Internet connection 2.Network bandwidth of 1.54Mbps or greater 3.Sound card and speakers/headphones (optional, but recommended)

ABCD Degree 1.Time limit: learners’ performance time will be measured in avalanche simulation scenarios 2.Range of Accuracy: learners will be tested on the accuracy of them locating the buried beacon in simulated scenarios as well as their answers to essay questions 3.Proportion of correct responses to multiple choice questions will be measured 4.Qualitative standards: we are expecting a gradual progress in the quality of learners’ performance in simulated scenarios and essay answers

Course Objectives After completing the course, the learners are expected to be able to demonstrate the following avalanche beacon knowledge: 1.Identify situations for use 2.Describe key features 3.Describe how to configure 4.Describe steps of operation in rescue procedure 5.Describe handling and storage

Design Principles 1.Multimedia Principle 2.Contiguity Principle 3.Modality Principle 4.Redundancy Principle 5.Coherence Principle 6.Personalization Principle 7.Practice Principle 8.Universal Design
