InteLock Emmanuel Seguin, Kit Huynh, Joshua Coffin, Christos Tsiokos Faculty Advisor: Professor Aura Ganz Background Currently, there have been many keyless entry solutions that have been developed to eliminate the inconvenience of toting a key around or by making the key a more convenient tool to use. These various solutions range from card scanners, retina scanners, fingerprint identification systems, and combination locks. Even though these solutions are unique and some models even use state of the art technology, they can be very costly and the idea of presenting a key to a reader or scanner can be a hassle when range of motion is limited. Abstract InteLock will be a new keyless entry system that will be added to the family of solutions all ready out there. Initially designed for use by the residential population, InteLock’s goal is to assist homeowners in making everyday life more convenient. This new keyless entry system will be developed using the IEEE (ZigBee) standard. ZigBee is intended for use in home automation systems and consists of wireless sensors and switches. Due to ZigBee technology, InteLock will provide unique characteristics of low cost, low power and reliability that will separate itself from the other solutions on the market. With InteLock, the user will never have to take their identification key out of their pocket or purses in order to gain access into an entry way. In addition, InteLock will provide the user the ability to remotely access their entry system. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT 2007 College of Engineering - University of Massachusetts Amherst Design Challenges Creating small enough components that the system can be easily installed into existing residential doors without modification Utilizing a wireless technology that is highly secure while being low power Developing firmware to operate ZigBee star network using Atmel’s ZigBee stack Creating functionality to control and operate locking system Modifying an existing electric deadbolt for use with our system Analyzing and understand the mechanical and electronic operation of a purchased electric deadbolt Building a two way current switch to control deadbolt using ZigBee end device IO Principle of Operation User will have on them a unique key that the wireless system will recognize. Upon the turn of the doorknob, the system will lock or unlock the electronic deadbolt depending on if the user key is present and if it is valid or not. Turning the doorknob left will cause the system to lock the door, turning it right will cause the system to unlock the door. Users do not need to take their key out of their pockets in order for the system to operate. The system will recognize all valid keys that are defined in it’s network.
