1 USER INTERFACE CONTROL MODULE S ECURE IT : Automated Laptop Security System University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science Electrical and Systems Engineering ABSTRACT In a university setting where most students own a laptop, protecting it is a key issue, especially in public spaces like libraries. Some libraries provide cable locks for their patrons, requiring them to borrow a lock from the front desk, find a place to loop the lock (such as a fixed table leg), then attach the lock to the laptop. However, most users find this process too troublesome. SecureIT is an automated laptop security system that relieves users of the burden of manually locking their laptops. The device, which is installed at the study space, is activated by placing the laptop on it and then swiping an ID card. After activation, the user can request a lock down of their laptop by pressing a button. The device will also lock automatically after detecting user inactivity for a period of time. The laptop can be either open or closed before it is locked. If the laptop is open prior to locking, the device's locking mechanism blocks any access to the laptop's keyboard and touchpad, preventing unauthorized access to the computer. The device can only be unlocked using the ID card that activated it or through an administrator override. SecureIT also has an administrator interface for library officials to keep track of all devices over an ethernet network. If attempted theft occurs, an administrator will be notified at the administrator terminal, as well as through SMS message. Fan blades cover laptop preventing theft Red LED indicates Locked state Laptop may also be locked while in the closed position If pressure pad does not detect use, device will lock automatically User presses the LOCK button and swipes Penncard to unlock the device Green LED lights up to indicate device is open and ready to lock Anytime in the Open state, user may remove the laptop Yellow LED will light up; device is now ready for a new user The Locking Mechanism consists of a series of fan blades, using a continuous rotation servo motor as the actuator. The servo is attached to the bottom main blade, which guides the rest of the blades by metal hinges. A solenoid will drop into a slot in the main blade to lock the fan position. The solenoid will rise to unlock the blades when the device is active. Stoppers in the casing prevent outside movement of the other fan blades. The Control Module is run on an Arduino Duemilanove microcontroller, with an attached ethernet card, and serial port. There are four main states: Idle, In Use, Locked, and Alarm. Each state changes with valid inputs from the user or sensors on the device. State changes are indicated by both the LEDs, and the device locking actuators. The user interface of the SecureIT device consists of: 3 LEDs to indicate the device state; a LOCK/UNLOCK button; a pressure pad for sensing laptop presence and laptop use; and a magnetic card reader for reading PennCards. The Administrator Interface is a Web App that will display the current state of all SecureIT devices. Alarms will display on the interface, and the administrator will receive an SMS message in the event of an alarm.
