Presentation transcript:

Recycle Mania @ CSU Submitted by Jennifer Holtzmann Resident Assistant Colorado State University I created this bulletin board to promote Recycle Mania in my hall (we were in the lead among the other halls on campus). Some of the information pertains specifically to CSU. It is useful for promoting recycling and waste minimization.

Recycle Mania @ CSU Recycle Mania is a ten-week event, from Jan. 27th through April 5th. The main goal is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. Currently, CSU is in first place for Grand Champion nationwide (CU is 28th). Let’s keep up the good work!

Recycling Facts: Metals 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute! More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product. Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks. An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!

Recycling Facts: Glass Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials. A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose -- and even longer if it's in the landfill.

Recycling Facts: Paper Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year! When you smell a dump, what you're actually smelling is the paper in the dump!

Recycling Facts: Plastic Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year! Every year we make enough plastic film to shrink-wrap Texas.

What Can I Recycle? Cardboard Beverage Containers Plastic With a 1 or 2 on it Aluminum or Steel Paper Newspaper, bulk mail, magazines, among others

How Can I Recycle? Set up a recycling bin in your room. The tan bin CSU provides in your room works perfectly! Separate paper, plastic and aluminum, and cardboard when you take out your recycling. It only takes a few minutes more than it would to simply throw everything in the dumpster

How Can I Recycle? Reduce the amount you buy or use. Use a hand towel to clean messes, rather than a paper towel. Reuse the things you can. Save and reuse plastic grocery bags instead of throwing them away.

You Can Help Reduce This:
