The Sin Nature of Man

What is Sin? Hebrew – “Chata” means to go out of the way, to miss the mark Hebrew – “Pasha” – to transgress Hebrew – “Avah” – to twist, to act perversely Greek – “Hamaritia” – missing of the mark Greek - Paraptoma” – a falling away from law, truth, right Greek “Parabasis” – going over or beyond truth and right, transgression Greek “Anomia” – lawlessness Greek “Asebeia” - irreverence

What did Jesus say about Sin? Jesus told the people about to stone Mary Magdalene that anyone without sin should “cast the first stone” – all are sinners Jesus said, “Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin” (John 8:34) About Himself, Jesus said “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) For forgiving others sins, Jesus told Peter to forgive “seventy time seven” (Matt. 18:21-22)

What terms are used for the Sin Nature? “Flesh” – “For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death” (Rom. 7:5) “Carnal” – “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Rom. 8:6) “Old man” – “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, the henceforth we should not serve sin” (Rom. 6:6); “Lie not one to another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds (Col. 3:9)

What is the Sin Nature? The Sin Nature of Man started with Adam after he sinned in rebellion against God in the Garden of Eden; “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil” - Gen 3:22a Two parts of sin nature – good “works” with wrong motivation and sin/iniquity/evil deeds; “All unrighteousness is sin” (1 John 5:17) “Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin (James 4:17);

What is the Sin Nature? Good “works” done in the flesh burned up at the judgment; we will be judged on our works (Rev. 20:12) Sin, wrong things – also done in flesh but paid for by the cross (1 John 2:2)

What is difference between Adam and Christ and Sin Nature? Adam was the first of all mankind to have sin nature and a “tendency” to sin after he disobeyed God; the sin nature is inherited; “In sin did my mother conceive me” – Psa. 51:5b; “Wherefore as by one man sin entered the world: and death by sin” – Romans 5:12a From Adam all inherited his sin nature and the penalty of sin which is death as well as the power of sin in our lives; “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Cor. 15:21-22)

What is difference between Adam and Christ and Sin Nature? Jesus (the “second Adam) “knew no sin” and had no earthly father; Jesus, “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously, Who his own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteous.” (1 Peter 2:22-24a) Jesus became “sin for us” who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor. 5:21)

What Happened from the First Sin? By sinning, through Adam mankind brought on the penalty of eternal death to all born, which includes: Separation of fellowship with God; All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23) A dormant human spirit (spiritual death); “The south that sinneth, it shall die (Eze. 18:4b); “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23); “Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature” (2 Cor. 5:17) Pain and hardship (Gen. 3:16-19) – “thorns and thistles”, “pain” in childbirth, “sweat of thy face” in working Our mind became a battlefield against sin (Rom. 7)

What is the Solution? The first step to accept Jesus Christ as Savior and by taking steps to fight one’s sin nature; “since by man (Adam) came death, by man (Jesus – the second Adam) came also the resurrection of the dead”

What is the Solution? The second step is after becoming a Christian to confess our sins daily and frequently which stops us from being in fellowship with God just as with Adam “For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. (Psa. 51:3) “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)

What is the Solution? The third step is to ask God to be in control instead of ourselves and to subject our will to His Will. Use the example of the Lord’s Prayer – “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7) “Forasmuch then as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind” (1 Pet. 4:1a)

What is the Solution? The fourth step is to repent and flee from sin. Repent from sin – “Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.” (Rom. 6:1b-2a) Stop sinning – “Awake to righteousness, and sin not” (1 Cor. 15:34) Run away/flee from sin – “Flee fornication” (1 Cor. 6:18); “flee from idolatry” (1 Cor. 10:14); “flee also youthful lusts” (2 Tim. 2:22); “But you, o man of God, flee from these things” – after a long list of sins to flee from (1 Tim. 6:11)

What is the Solution? The fifth step is to read the Bible. Read and learn the Bible; “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against God (Psalm 119:11) “Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby: If so be you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.” (1 Pet. 2:1-3)

What is the Solution? The sixth step is to encourage each other and pray Encourage each other and pray in the Lord ; “Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that you may be healed/restored (James 5:16)

Remember the Sinless One Who paid for our sins
