Today we will...  Introduce journal articles:  what are they  scholarly & popular sources  where to find them  Use PsycINFO to find empirical journal articles  Introduce APA citation style & tips

Journal Articles  What are journal articles?  How are articles different from books?  Where can you search for articles?

Types of Journal Articles  Written by academics / experts in the field  Author’s credentials are listed  Bibliography is provided  Reviewed by other experts /peers in the field  Intended audience is professionals, researchers, or students in the field  Authored by journalists / staff writers  Written for the general public  Bibliographies are rarely included  May include advertisements Academic / Scholarly / Peer-Reviewed Popular

Finding Empirical Research in PsycINFO Empirical Study: A study based on facts, systematic observation, or experiment, rather than theory or general philosophical principle. For an empirical study, one designs an experiment &/or observes variables under carefully controlled conditions or interviews people first & then analyses the data obtained in order to determine the effects of the variables.
