Possibilities for further intensification of the JINR Educational Programme S.Pakuliak 110 th session of JINR Scientific Council September 15-16, 2011

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME AT JINR On 18 January 2011, the JINR University Center celebrated its 20 th anniversary. In 1991 JINR, MSU, and Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPI) jointly established the JINR University Centre (the UC). The first UC Director (1993 – 2005) Prof. S.P. Ivanova made a great contribution to the creation and development of the UC. In 1995, JINR's own postgraduate studies were opened, whose functioning is also entrusted upon the UC.

MAIN DIRECTIONS OF JINR UNIVERSITY CENTRE ACTIVITY Students, JINR-based departments JINR postgraduate programmes International education actions Student laboratory infrastructure Secondary-school oriented activity

JINR-based departments Moscow State University - 31  Elementary Particle Physics  Neutron Diffraction Studies Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology - 28  Fundamental and Applied Problems of Micro-world Physics Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics, and Automatics - 64  Electronics for Physics Research Installations Dubna International University  Nuclear Physics  Theoretical Physics  Biophysics  Distributed Computing Systems  Nanotechnologies and New Materials Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute - 2  Heavy Ion Physics Other Universities from JINR Member States - 83 Total number of students preparing their graduation theses in the laboratories of JINR in academic year was 440

International chair “Nuclear physics, new materials and technologies” was opened on July 9, 2008 at the Gumilev Eurasian University on the basis of the DC-60 heavy ion cyclotron of Interdisciplinary Scientific Research Center. JINR in cooperation with Dubna International University signed two 4-side agreement with Gumilev Eurasian National University (Astana) and Al-Farabi Kazhakh National University (Almaty). During academic year first 7 students from Kazakhstan were trained in the framework of these agreements and successfully defend their bachelor theses. They got two Bachelor diplomas: one from the Dubna University and another from their native University in Kazakhstan. Now all these students enter the Master Program at DIU and will continue their participation in the research teams at FLNR. 8 students (4 from GENU and 4 from AKNU) arrived to Dubna to be trained in the framework of the same program during the academic year

JINR postgraduate programmes Each year about 60 people are educated at the JINR postgraduate courses starting from Among 217 postgraduate students, who finished the postgraduate studies from 1998, 71 people defended the PhD theses. Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics - 18 Theoretical Physics - 10 Charged Particle Beam Physics and Accelerator Techniques - 7 High Energy Physics - 2 Solid State Physics - 2 Physics Experiment Techniques, Instrument Physics, and Physics Research Automation - 5 Computational Mathematics - 0 Mathematical and Software Support of Computers, Computational Complexes, and Networks - 2 Mathematical Simulation and Numerical Methods - 5 Radiobiology - 3

The International summer student practice is organized in three stages from May till September. In 2011, the total number of students from 10 countries (Egypt, France, Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovak Republic, Romania, Belorussia, South Africa and Ukraine) taking part in the Practice was 140 (114 in 2010 and 88 in 2009)

His Excellency, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the Russian Federation appeals to students from Egypt with a welcoming speech and award certificates of completion the Practices in the JINR

The International Summer School “Nuclear Physics Methods and Accelerators in Biology and Medicine” was successfully organized in July 2-12.

There is a need to update the Program of JINR Fellowships and the Regulations of the Program, and also to upgrade the related infrastructure for receiving young scientists in Dubna

In collaboration with CERN the UC is organizing the scientific schools for the teachers from the JINR Member States. First and third schools held at CERN on November 2009 and Second and fourth scientific school for the teachers held at JINR on July 2010 and Teachers from Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belorussia, Russia and Ukraine took participation in the schools.

Acquaint visits of School delegations from the JINR Member States Opinion of the pupils Indeed excursion to the mind and soul. I do not regret the trip to Dubna.... impression was amazing, and so many unanswered questions.... I would like to add that I really liked it, and I would like to return there, to work at JINR. Masha Popova (Grade 8) and Masha Buchnev (Grade 11), Moscow school N 814

The UC is using modern video- conference facilities to promote the fundamental science. 16 Since 2009 the University Center helped to organize more than 15 video-conferences between CERN, JINR and schools of Russia

Using of the experience in training bachelors and masters of Kazakhstan in educational programs for students from other Member States Opening of the Summer Student Practices for participation of young scientists from non-Member States and active involvement of the JINR laboratories in the preparation of these programs Update of the program for JINR fellowships and upgrade of the related infrastructure for receiving young scientists in Dubna Support of the UC activities for high school teachers from Member States
