1 CERN: from fundamental sciences to daily applications
Welcome to Accelerating Science and Innovation CERN: from fundamental sciences to daily applications 1

2 The Mission of CERN Push back the frontiers of knowledge
E.g. the secrets of the Big Bang …what was the matter like within the first moments of the Universe’s existence? Develop new technologies for accelerators and detectors Information technology - the Web and the GRID Medicine - diagnosis and therapy Train scientists and engineers of tomorrow Unite people from different countries and cultures 2

3 CERN was founded 1954: 12 European States
“Science for Peace” Today: 21 Member States ~ 2300 staff ~ 1600 other paid personnel ~ scientific users Budget (2014) ~1000 MCHF Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom Candidate for Accession: Romania Associate Member in Pre-Stage to Membership: Serbia Applicant States for Membership or Associate Membership: Brazil, Croatia, Cyprus, Pakistan, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine Observers to Council: India, Japan, Russia, Turkey, United States of America; European Commission and UNESCO ----- Meeting Notes (09/01/ :16) ----- nnn 3 3

Science is getting more and more global MENA: ~50 by Institute /~100 by passport 5 5

6 Relations with CERN Governmental Co-operation Agreements: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Jordan (SESAME), Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, U.A.E. Other scientific contacts: Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar Teachers Programme: Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E. Summer Student Programme: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, UAE As of 2010, non-European countries may become Associate Members or Full Members of CERN.

7 Age Distribution of Scientists
They do not all stay: where do they go? 26 Today: >2500 PhD students in LHC experiments 65

8 CERN: Innovation & Technology transfer
Interfacing between fundamental science and key technological developments CERN Technologies and Innovation Detecting particles Accelerating particle beams Large-scale computing (Grid) 8

9 LHC accelerator: More than hundred industrial contracts across the world….

10 Superconducting magnets for Medical imaging
>30’000 MRI (Magnetic Resonant Imaging) systems worldwide

11 CERN spin-off: More efficient solar panels
Derived from vacuum technology developed at CERN for particle accelerators. R&D activity based at CERN Temperatures 100 degrees higher than what commercially available 300 high-temperature solar thermal panels (1200 square meters) on the rooftop of the GVA airport.

12 www.eps.org/physicsandeconomy Physics based industry generates:
3800 billion revenue (15% of total) employs 15.4 million of people R&D investment 47 billion
