Nutrition

Nutrients Parts of food that the body takes out of food that is necessary for growth and maintenance of life. Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, and Minerals.

Nutrient deficiency Lack of vital nutrients for proper body function. Can lead to other diseases depending on which nutrient your body is lacking.

Carbohydrates Taken out of food for energy. Digestion – Changed into simple sugars called glucose. Sugars and starches found in Breads, Cereals, fruits and vegetables percent of diet.

Proteins Used for heat and energy. Help growth, building of new tissue, and repair damaged tissue. Found in meats, eggs, milk, fruits and vegetables percent of diet.

FATS Used for energy after all stored Carbohydrates are used. Polysaturated – Good fats, found in vegetables. Saturated – Found in all types of condiments and fatty foods. 25 percent of diet.

Vitamins Used for energy. Vitamin A – Meats, Cheese, eggs, milk. Helps protect skin, immune system. Vitamin B – Found in all foods. Help in metabolism of other nutrients.

Vitamins… Vitamin C – Help build muscle, Ligaments, bones, and blood vessels. Found in citrus fruits. Vitamin D – Essential in calcium metabolism. Helps builds strong bones. Found in Dairy Products.

Vitamins… Vitamin E – Protects cell membranes and immune system. Helps fight disease. Found in wheat, nuts, mayonnaise, spinach, avocado, and oils. Vitamin K – Aids protein in building tissue. Not stored in body, need very little, must get from diet. Found in Green Vegetables, and some oils.

MINERALS Calcium – Helps in building healthy bones, teeth, blood clotting, and nervous system. Found in dairy products, dark green vegetables, and nuts. Iron – Helps in formation of hemoglobin- carries o2 to cells in body. Found in meats, dark green vegetables, and whole wheat.

MINERALS… Zinc – helps in tissue and cell growth and repair. Found in meat, seafood, milk, and whole wheat products.

WATER Makes up over 75 percent of our body. Water helps to regulate body temperature, transports nutrients to cells, and rids the body of waste materials. Essential for survival.

Cholesterol Fat that is manufactured within the body. Mostly from animal foods (meats). Clogs arteries and blood vassals. Can lead to heart attack and strokes.

CALORIES Calories – units of energy body uses for daily functions. Positive Calories – Consume more than we use Negative Calories – Consume less than we use.
