In the school year 382 students attended Pierremont Elementary School. Pierremont Elementary serves grades K-5 along with Parkway’s exceptionally gifted population called the MOSAICS Academy (IQ’s of 140 or higher). Additionally, Pierremont houses Parkway’s language program. Below is the breakdown of our 2010=2011 classes: Kindergarten3 classes (1 full day, 2 classes of AM/PM kdg.) How have you implemented the DIA work at your school (logistics, facilitation, data collected and resources)? We have a DIA committee which includes our DIA teacher leader, principal leader, one specialist, one counselor and a classroom teacher. We collected various data on our African American students K- 5. The data collected included academic promise indicator teacher checklist, MAP scores, Math assessments, Reading assessments and Dominie, NNAT, grades and teacher recommendation. We went through all the data to pick our DIA students. We identified 6 K-2 students and students. We have 10 students that participated. Some students didn’t want to stay after school. We are in the process of getting end of the year data for our identified DIA students. We will take a look at this and see how they have improved and what areas we still need to work on next year.

What did Pierremont do this year ? We had a Spirit of Excellence assembly at the beginning of the year. We had teachers’ volunteer their lunch time to have one grade level lunch bunch (once or twice a month). This was a time to build relationships with our African-American students. It was optional and an opportunity for them to talk about anything. We got our DIA students involved in Student Council and Bus Duty. Our DIA teacher leader and one classroom teacher met with the DIA students weekly after school. The students participated in RRR one week and the next week they stayed for an after-school group that focused on leadership, team building and academics. We will have an Award Ceremony for all African-American students K-5 to recognize their hard work and accomplishments for the school year.

What were some of the biggest Ahas for your school team? Only one student received Spirit of Excellence. Some kids didn’t want to stay after-school. It was challenging to always reach individual needs in a multi-age after-school group.

What are some of your team’s proudest accomplishments? One of our fifth graders received the Spirit of Excellence One of our DIA students stated “Mrs. LaChance helped me speak up and never give up.” Another student stated, “Mrs. Benac is a nice teacher, she helps me.” Our African American students’ attendance has increased this year Staff members have worked with the DIA committee by asking questions, having more difficult conversations and working as a team to develop goals for DIA students. One of our DIA student’s behavior improved this year.

How are you going to keep the momentum going? Next steps? *We would like to have a mentorship program next year. Each teacher would have one child to mentor. We are in the process of coming up with duties and expectations of the mentors and mentees. *We would like to continue involving our DIA children in after-school activities and in leadership roles such as Student Council, Bus leaders and RRR. *We would like to involve our DIA children in Pierremont’s Daily announcements. *We would like to see more teachers trained in Social Justice and have more staff development.
