The Tourism Industry

Terms Traveler-Anyone on a trip Traveler-Anyone on a trip anywhere, whatever the length or purpose Visitor- someone engaged in tourism Visitor- someone engaged in tourism Tourist- an overnight visitor Tourist- an overnight visitor Tourism- is the set of activities of a person outside his or her environment for at least one night and less than 12 months Tourism- is the set of activities of a person outside his or her environment for at least one night and less than 12 months

Economic Impact –Employment for 1.6 million –Profits for hundreds of businesses –Revives depressed areas –1/3 of workers are 15–24 years old, compared with 15% in the general Canadian labour force. –1/3 of tourism workers attend school full-time. –The accommodations industry employs almost 3/4 of its labour force full-time. –51% of the labour force in the food and beverages services industry works full time. –Forty-two percent of the total tourism labour force has at least some postsecondary education.
