Our aims This year the Staff Development strand of the RSC for London has two main aims: –bring on board a greater number of Staff Development Managers who have not been involved with e-learning –help the institutions we support integrate their staff development, teaching and learning and ILT strategies.

Some concerns: To what extent do you feel engaged with e-learning in your institution? How supported do you feel by your own institution re e-learning implementation? As an SD Manager/Officer, do you feel responsible for e-learning staff development? What is your own vision for staff development and e-learning?

Welcome, introductions and your questions ?

How best to implement a SD programme for e-learning with a restricted budget and limited equipment? Edwina Tinner, Orpington College

Welcome, introductions and your questions How do you implement and project manage a PDA-based educational software for dental students in a teaching hospital. Adesina Iluyemi, Queen Mary University of London

Welcome, introductions and your questions What can I use to promote e-learning skills among my teaching colleagues in our HE College? We’ve looked at FERL, but it doesn’t really meet our needs. Remmert de Vroome, Ravensbourne College

Welcome, introductions and your questions Do you still have ILT Champions? How are they funded? Are your champions working with Standard Unit materials? Is there any compulsory IT/ILT training for staff? Peter Trethewey, Bromley College

Welcome, introductions and your questions What’s an effective way of maintaining enthusiasm after a staff development day, given that staff have limited time or resources to continue development? Patti Taylor, City of Westminster College

Welcome, introductions and your questions The college needs a measurable outcome, i.e. qualification that students (staff) can mark towards as part of their ILT Training. Is FPP the best one? Or is the JISC one ready

Welcome, introductions and your questions OK, so everyone has e-learning now! But how can we move from having “pockets of excellence” in staff expertise to having a wider strategic approach that gives all staff the ability to use e-learning well? Ruth Simons, LSU

Welcome, introductions and your questions How do you track the work you do as an SD manager/ILT Coordinator Sue Batmaz, Bexley College

An holistic approach to e- learning and staff development An holistic approach to e- learning and staff development Philip ElliotMartin Compton Head of Interactive Learning and Quality 6 years at THC ILT Coordinator 11 years at THC A presentation from Tower Hamlets College

The e-learning agenda - what staff development managers need to know Q&A

The e-learning agenda - what staff development managers need to know Harnessing Technology: Transforming Learning and Children’s Services (DFES e-Strategy, March 2005)March 2005 Innovative Practice with e-Learning (JISC case studies)JISC case studies ICT and e-learning in FE (Becta, September 2004)September 2004 e-Learning and Technology (LSDA)LSDA London Strategic Unit – Strategic Demonstrating Transformation (FERL)FERL e-Learning Standards (Lifelong Learning UK)Lifelong Learning UK Managing Inspection (FERL)FERL

Managing e-learning and staff development - How it works… Does it work? “There is a wealth of ILT developments going on at present but totally uncoordinated. Since I took post I’ve been overwhelmed by the different number of visits, contacts and projects in the college.” (a college staff development manager)

What are the main issues you face as SD managers? Time Funding Commitment from SMT Strategic direction - Team development; infrastructure; policy development Number of projects Innovation – making the most of what you’ve got knowing what ILT’s been used; how can that be shared? Is word of mouth a good method? Match staff’s ICT skills to resources available Identify what is going on re e-learning Online booking system for staff development How are staff dev sessions orchestrated at THC?

What next? Action points: –Address some of the issues identified and share developments next meeting –How are part-time staff supported?
