Mel and Zora Rashkis Elementary School at Meadowmont VIRGINIA TECH COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE & URBAN STUDIES Labs for the 21st century Sponsored by: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency U. S. Department of Energy Architect’s StatementDaylighting I High Performance School Case Study: Color coded hallways and different height of drinking fountains are only two of the items which show this buildings attention to details. Porticos between the classrooms and the play area/ courtyard also provide shading for the classroom windows. Light wells centrally placed in classrooms provide optimum levels of day lighting. Special louvers are placed to filter this light. Open classroom designs are critical for orientations for learning environments. Light wells are placed intermittently, extending from the perimeter to the central stem of the building. There is an interstitial space provided above for use of centrally controlled heating, cooling, and air handling systems. This system is integrated with the naturally controlled environmental systems located on the building’s exterior.
