YOU MUST ANSWER 5 QUESTIONS Questions 4 and 10 offer a CHOICE of question. Career Bridge students must NOT answer question 7. All questions relate to material covered in the lectures and the textbook. All questions require you to comment on the issues raised and perhaps reflect on their relevance to your experience.

Question 1 Communication in the workplace This lecture drew on Mohan et al., pp It examined how our‘mental set’ makes us selective in what we understand and in how we communicate. It explored what Mohan meant by selective perception. It also examined the examples used to explain the impact of selective perception on our communication. It asked the question ‘Why is selective perception significant in the communication process?’

Question 2 Video : Crosstalk This video examines how different ways of speaking can lead to racial stereotyping. In particular, it examines the misunderstandings arising in cross cultural/intercultural communication. Question 3 Improving Workplace Communication What do Mohan et al., mean by the term communication competence? Effective communication in the workplace includes: giving and receiving feedback, handling conflict, identifying the needs of others and presenting as a credible expert. Questions to consider: What is appropriate disclosure? How did you perform on the self-monitoring inventory?

Question 5 Preparing for Interview Two recent graduates, Simone Cocking and Chris Morton outlined in detail their experiences of: on line applications, dealing with psychometric testing assessment centres preparing for interview and interview techniques. How relevant did you find their advice?

Question 4 Non-verbal language and the interview Mohan et al., argue that credibility is an important attribute in professional life. Credibility has three components: Competence Trustworthiness and Dynamism These are conveyed in verbal and non-verbal communication Eye contact regulates the flow of conversation. Paralanguage - aspects of the voice such as loudness, tone, pitch are as important as the language itself.
