Textual Evidence Textual evidence comes directly from the book. This can be a direct quote spoken by a character or a passage of narration. Response This is where you will respond to the text in a thoughtful way. Follow the guiding questions to respond at the three different levels of analysis.  Write down quotation from the text  Remember you can use an ellipses (…) if you only want to use part of a quote  Include citation (Author #) Level 1: The Context of the Quote  Who is saying the quote?  What is happening at this moment?  What does the quote mean? Level 2: Author’s Tools/Literary Elements and Significance  Choose a literary element that is revealed: o CHARACTERIZATION: What does this passage reveal about the character? o CONFLICT: What problem or issue is revealed? o THEME: What themes are revealed in this passage? What is being said about that theme? o SYMBOLISM: What symbol is revealed? Why is it important? o WRITING STYLE: (Diction, imagery, etc.) What does the language reveal? o OTHER?  What is the significance of these lines? Why is this quote important? o What might the author’s intention be? o Why is the passage written in such a way? o How is this passage related to the text overall? Level 3: Develop a thesis.  To create a successful thesis, ask yourself: o Is this thesis true for the book and/or the world? o Could you argue against this thesis?

Model Dialectical Journal The Great Gatsby Chapter # 5 Textual Evidence Textual evidence comes directly from the book. This can be a direct quote spoken by a character or a passage of narration. Response This is where you will respond to the text in a thoughtful way. Follow the guiding questions to respond at the three different levels of analysis. “Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever…Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one” (Fitzgerald 98). Level 1: The Context of the Quote This quote takes place when Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick are exploring Gatsby’s mansion. Nick Carraway observes that Gatsby must be affected by his reunion with Daisy after five years. Nick knows the green light at the end of Gatsby’s dock represented Gatsby’s hope to be in a relationship with Daisy again, and Nick wonders if Gatsby acknowledges that reality is different from the dream he hoped would come true. Level 2: Author’s Tools/Literary Elements and Significance Nick’s observation of Gatsby reveals the symbol of the green light. When readers were first introduced to the green light in Chapter 1 when Gatsby was on his dock with his arm outstretched to the other side of the bay, it represented Gatsby’s hope for the future: that he would one day be with Daisy. Now, the meaning of the green light has changed slightly and we can see that Gatsby’s unrealistic dream—that he can repeat the past—will likely be unattainable due to the fact that Daisy is married and has a child. Gatsby always imagined that it would be easy to erase the five years that he and Daisy were separated once they were reunited, but Nick hopes Gatsby recognizes that this is not the case. The symbol of the green light is also important to the novel because it relates to the theme of the American Dream: just as Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy again is unlikely, the idealistic American Dream is also often unattainable. Level 3: Develop a thesis. Maintaining hope in an unrealistic dream can be harmful to a person. This thesis appears to be true for the book as a whole as other characters, such as George Wilson, struggle, and fail to obtain their dreams. George is a good man with simple dreams who is being used and treated unfairly by the world. I do not like to think that this is true for the real world as it takes a very pessimistic stance towards ones dreams and achieving them.

Multigenre research paper is an alternative to the traditional five paragraph. It emphasizes the use of multiple genres to represent a given research topic. With this type of project, writers are expected to research their given topic and then present the information they gathered using a variety of genres, with an emphasis on writing and composition. The genres created to represent the topic can be put together through the creation of a theme and bracketed by an introduction and conclusion. This creates a unified research paper that avoids the structure of a traditional five paragraph essay. Multigenre research paper:
