1 9/2/15 Do Now: Homework: Take a “Lost at Sea” handout from the front and have a seat. Signed Syllabus (Due 9/9) Supplies (Due 9/14) Signup for TurnItIn (Due 9/14) Content Objective: Students will work independently to evaluate what items are most important (and why) in a survival situation. Students will then work in groups to discuss and come to a consensus on the rank of all the items. Language Objective: Students will thoughtfully and carefully evaluate and discuss the value and importance of the items in the survival situation.

2 Look Ahead: Wednesday: Survival Activity Thursday: Syllabus Review Friday: Housekeeping/Big Read Monday: No School (Labor Day) Next Week: The Big Read

3 Guidelines: Here are some guidelines to use in reaching consensus: 1. Avoid arguing for your own individual judgments. Approach the task on the basis of logic. 2. Avoid changing your mind if it is only to reach agreement and avoid conflict. Support only solutions with which you are able to agree at least somewhat. 3. Avoid “conflict-reducing” techniques such as majority vote, averaging, or trading in reaching your decision. 4. View differences of opinion as a help, rather than a hindrance in decision making.

4 Scoring: The score is the difference between the actual answer and the group ranking. The lower the score the better. Example: Sextant – Actual answer: Group: Ranking: Score: 5
