3 year project funded by the Insurance Council of Australia Database of natural perils in Australia 1900 to 1999 Nine perils - tropical cyclones, bushfires, floods, earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, hailstorms, tornadoes and gusts. What is PerilAUS?

Approximately 4,800 events; 9,400 affected locations and 1,200 events with a damage index. GIS/Mapping component based on affected locations. What is PerilAUS?

Events Search is the most common type of search. Location Search is best for specific geographical areas (eg. States, ICA zones or postcodes). One event may have one or many affected locations; for example; the 18 March 1990 hailstorm in Sydney affected over 170 individual locations.

The criteria specified here will search for all those events in Victoria which have a Damage Index of 12 or less. Search criteria can be specified. If no search criteria are selected the entire database is displayed.

Check the Search Criteria. Go Back to modify search. Next to execute search.

The Events Screen is similar to that in any Windows based program where columns can be added, deleted, sorted, resized and moved.

A report can be generated and printed from any of the PerilAUS screens (Events, Locations and Maps).

Types of Reports for Events include, a list of Events, a detailed report for an event, summaries by event Damage Index, peril type and by event magnitude.

The report produced here displays a summary by peril type, showing bushfire to be the most frequently damaging event in Victoria.

A graph can be generated from both the Events and Locations screens. Types of graphs for Events include, number of events by year, number of events by peril type and number of events by Damage Index.

The graph here illustrates the range and frequency of Damage Indexes.

A number of map layers are available which show various boundary or topographic features that can enhance the perils information. For this demo we have started a new search using events for Western Australia which have a DI of 12 or less.

Choose the criteria to use as the basis for your map.

Use Zoom In, Radius or Marquee for a closer view of the area you are interested in.

You can select a symbol to view the location and all events which have affected that location.

Produce a Thematic map by Local DI or No. of affected locations for Postcode, ICA Zone or State.

Summaries for a postcode, ICA Zone or State/Territory can be created from the map simply by clicking on your area of interest.

In addition to these standard functions, the mapping component of PerilAUS allows the import of a variety of other map layers (such as streets, rivers, company portfolio data etc). These can be overlain on the perils data.

On-line help can be obtained at any time by selecting the Help and Contents.

You can find out more about the Project Background, the Data, the Damage Index, the ICA Contributors and Credits. You can also select the Index or Find tabs for help with specific functions.
