An Approach to Unit Delivery and Assessment Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 6 Application of Manufacturing Techniques in Engineering

L2 U6 Application of Manufacturing Techniques in Engineering Approach given here is formed by following the awarding bodies: Learning outcomes Assessment tasks Learning outcomes: Production team – work together to organise and manufacture components (LO.1) Production planning – plan and schedule for manufacturing (LO.2) CNC machining – set up and use tools and CNC equipment to process materials (LO.3) Quality control – apply appropriate techniques and interpret quality data (LO.4) Next >

Unit assessment tasks: Team working – each member to produce a report on their contribution Interpreting engineering drawing and production planning Using CNC equipment Follow quality control procedures Two options for assessment are provided Next >

Unit assessment tasks: Insert (aluminium or brass) Unit assessment tasks: Brief for option A Based on making multiple golf tees CNC router/mill to machine the metapor (sintered aluminium) mould A lathe to machine the insert or use the insert provided in the Materials and Processes module Use the ST350 module injection moulder to make the golf tees Team to divide the work during their planning Brief for option B Based on an engineering component (a lever boss) CNC lathe to machine multiple parts Next >

Delivery and assessment approach: An example of a scheme of work is provided that enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills to complete the assessed tasks It refers to: Assignments in LJ modules Use of CNC machines Student textbook Internet sites Ideas for visits LJ support documents LJ support documents include: Example engineering drawings Example production plan Sample statistical data Documents to support the golf tee project assessment tasks Next >

Delivery and assessment approach: The scheme of work refers to the use of a CNC machine The scheme also refers to the use of the ST350 injection moulding machine The CNC machine is used to manufacture a mould … … and the mould is used to manufacture plastic golf tees Next >

ALTERNATIVE – IF STUDENTS DO NOT MAKE THEIR OWN INSERT Delivery and assessment approach: Assessment brief and tasks are provided Documents to support the golf tee project assessment tasks are included 3D stl files to be imported into the 3D CNC software package for creation of the CNC machine code. These files can also be opened for viewing in a 3D CAD software drawing package. (stl = stereolithography format) Alternative approach 2D dxf file can be imported into the CNC software package to create the CNC machine code. Note, depth details will need to be added manually. The file can also be opened for viewing in a 2D CAD software drawing package. (dxf = drawing exchange format) The student is to collect evidence during the assessed tasks, by producing: Minutes of meetings Engineering drawings Production plan Production schedule Quality control data System photographs ALTERNATIVE – IF STUDENTS DO NOT MAKE THEIR OWN INSERT Next >

Skills and knowledge acquired from the ST350 Materials and Processes module: Activities provide students with skills to make plastic parts A simulator enable students to experiment with different mould designs Other material forming processes are covered A full list of module activities is provided End >
