8 UNIT 1 – Skills Demonstration
1. Selecting and preparing materials/marking out Using and marking out on a range of materials, woods, metals and plastics, making use of equipment such as gauges, squares, scribers and rulers. 2. Using hand tools for cutting and shaping Sawing, chiselling, shearing, planing, filing. 3. Forming, bending or laminating Vacuum forming, line bending, laminating, press forming, steam bending, beaten metal, veneering. 4. Casting or moulding Pewter casting, aluminium alloy, hot glue injection, GRP and injection moulding. 5. Non-permanent joining techniques Using nuts and bolts, using screwed fastenings and nails, riveting, using solvents, using knock down fittings, thread cutting. 6. Permanent joining techniques Welding, brazing, soldering, gluing. 7. Machining and the use of power tools Drilling, cutting, turning, routing, milling. 8. Quantity production Using jigs, moulds, templates and formers. Sampling. 9. Using Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM) systems Using a vinyl cutter, laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC lathe, using CAD software, CNC router, CNC milling machine. 10. Using finishing techniques Preparing surfaces, staining, spraying, painting, plastic dip, varnishing, polishing, anodising, waxing. 11. Quality control and maintaining accuracy Working to tolerance and using stops, fences, visual inspection, using gauges and measuring equipment. 12. Teamwork Working to create an outcome as a member of a team. Participation and collaboration with others, communication, following instructions, time management, understanding their roles and leadership.

9 Unit 1 : Evidencing each Skill

10 Student Work: Unit 1 5–6 • Parts cut or shaped with precision. • Appropriate methods selected for the materials. • Learner worked independently and confidently at all times. • Detailed annotations have been made to support the evidence for the skill. Annotation identifies aspects of performance that could have been improved with suggestions for improvement. 3–4 • Limited precision in the cutting or shaping of parts. • Appropriate methods usually selected for the materials. • Learner requires little supervision when carrying out technique. • Some annotations have been made to support the evidence for the skill with some detail. Annotation identifies aspects of performance that could have been improved. 1–2 • Parts are cut or shaped inaccurately. • Inappropriate methods are selected for the materials being used. • Learner lacks confidence when working and requires close supervision when carrying out the technique. • Limited annotations have been made to support the evidence for the skill with some detail. Annotation is purely descriptive with no reflection on performance. Nothing of any value.

11 Pros: Cons: Students enjoy the practical work
Clear structure suits lower ability students Encourages students to be reflective Encourages collaborative work Cons: Admin heavy – systems needed Creativity can be limited Bottlenecks
