Let’s take a look at the CA ELA Common Core Content Standards. Note actual title includes literacy on History-Social Science, Science, and Technical subjects. Everyone has a role to play in terms of literacy.

Key Features of the ELA Standards Balance reading literature with reading informational text Balance narrative writing with informational, expository writing Focus on critical analysis of both fiction and non-fiction Emphasize vocabulary acquisition across the four strands of English–language arts Foster oral communication, collaboration, and listening skills Standards are embedded at grades K-5. Content-specific literacy standards are provided for grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12 Balance of literature and informational texts: Students are required to learn certain critical content, including classic myths and stories from around the world, America’s Founding Documents, and foundational American literature. The standards also require that students systematically develop knowledge of literature as well as knowledge in other disciplines through reading, writing, speaking, and listening in history/social studies and science Direct link to college and work readiness: The K-12 standards lend further specificity to what is expected for success in college and career by defining a developmentally appropriate progression of skills and understandings. Clear vertical progressions across grades: As students progress through the grades, they must both develop their comprehension skills and apply them to increasingly complex texts.

Key Features of the Math Standards Kindergarten through Grade Eight Standards: Domains High School Standards: Conceptual Categories Focus on arithmetic and fluency with whole numbers at early grades (K-5) Fluency with fractions and decimals Real world applications using modeling Algebra readiness by grade eight and established grade eight standards Focus in early grades on number to build a solid foundation: The standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades. This enables teachers to take the time needed to teach core concepts and procedures well and give students the opportunity to master them. In grades K-5 students gain a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Middle grades math builds on early foundation: In the middle grades, students build upon the strong foundation in grades K-5 through hands on learning in geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics. High school math focus on using mathematics and real-world problem solving: The high school standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges and emphasize mathematical modeling. Consistent pace across grade levels: As students progress through the grades, they must both develop their mathematical comprehension skills and apply them to increasingly complex mathematical problems. Emphasis on communicating mathematics: Students will develop skills in communicating mathematical problem solving and thinking. The CCSS include two sets of standards for use at eighth grade. One is to complete the kindergarten through grade seven standards and take Algebra 1 at grade eight, and the other is to complete the kindergarten through grade eight standards and take Algebra 1 in high school. Grade 8 standards (are intended to support a course for students who do not have the necessary prerequisite skills to enroll in an Algebra I course immediately after completing seventh grade)

This bill sets out the timetable for creating curriculum frameworks, which will put muscle and flesh on the skeleton of the basic standards to better guide teachers on what students are expected to know. The math frameworks will be completed by May 30, 2013 and English language arts a year later. That in turn will lead to the process for textbook adoption. The bill also extends the contract for the current California Standards Tests through 2014, at which point, if all is on schedule, the new Common Core assessments being developed by a consortium of states will replace them.

California Department of Education Resources Currently, the CDE is engaged in many activities designed to prepare the state’s educational stakeholders for full implementation of the CCSS. The following list highlights some of these activities: The California Department of Education has a web page with resources for support of the Common Core State Standards. A Web site (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cc/) was created, dedicated to presenting the latest information regarding the CCSS. This Web site contains links to many important resources including the following: Links to the CCSS including the California additions and modifications Links to historical documents leading up to the SBE adoption of the CCSS Frequently Asked Questions Brief overviews of the CCSS as a whole, the CCSS mathematics, and the CCSS ELA in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese CCSS for Mathematics: Preparing Students for Success in Algebra I–an informational flyer that provides a brief overview of how the new standards address preparing students for success in algebra Links to multiple resources made available by the CCSSO Assessment Update–a presentation from the North/South Information Meetings, presented in Sacramento on September 21, 2010, and in Ontario on September 28, 2010 A series of seven PowerPoint presentations made to the CTA’s Good Teaching Conference   The presentations and webinars available on this Web site have been delivered live around the state and are preserved for anyone to access at their convenience. The content of these presentations demonstrates California’s efforts to not only introduce the CCSS to all stakeholders, but also to delve into the specifics of how teachers may begin to integrate the CCSS into their curriculum as California moves forward toward full implementation. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cc/

Grade-level Curriculum K-6 This publication contains grade-level chapters with short descriptive narratives and the content standards for the CCSS in English language arts and mathematics. The CDE has created a publication entitled A Look at Kindergarten through Grade Six in California Public Schools. This publication discusses the standards for each subject by grade level and explains differences and commonalities between the past ELA and mathematics standards and the new CCSS.

Grade-level Curriculum 7-8 Everyone has been waiting patiently for the same type of publication for middle school. New this month, that resource is now available to download.

SCOE Resources This web app is freely available and optimized for iOS and Android smartphone users. An enhanced, searchable version of the service, including additional resources, will be available in the coming months in the iTunes App Store and the Android Market. The eStandards Common Core website provides similar information to traditional computer users.

SCOE Resources Database developed by the Sacramento County Office of Education to search the CCSS by subject, grade, and subject category (domain/cluster). California teachers who want to make sure their lessons meet the standards can now just check their smartphones. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) announced the release of a free eStandards Web app that connects K-12 teachers and administrators to the California Common Core State Standards. With the Web app, users can quickly find California's K-12 math standards and Language Arts standards by subject, grade, and category on their smartphones and other mobile devices. Hunt Institute Videos To further aid states as they continue to implement the Common Core State Standards (Standards), the Hunt Institute and the Council of Chief State School Officers have commissioned a series of video vignettes that explain the Standards in far greater depth. Also found at CDE in iTunes, these videos were developed to help diverse groups – educators, policymakers, parents – better understand the breadth and depth of the Standards and how they will improve teaching, make classrooms better, create shared expectations, and cultivate lifelong learning for all students. Common Core Implementation Checklist for Principals

California County Superintendents Educational Services Association Each grade level provides: A content overview and a summary of skills developed at that level. *Additional information about grades 9-12 will be provided at a later date. This handbook, created by the California County Superintendent's Educational Services Association (CCSESA) in consultation with the California State PTA, gives parents an introduction to California's CCSS and a summary of what students are expected to learn as they advance from kindergarten through grade eight. Parents’ Guide to Student Success The Guide includes: Key items that children should be learning in English language arts and mathematics in each grade. Activities that parents can do at home to support their child's learning.  Methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their child's teacher.   What is the Parents’ Guide to Student Success? National PTA® partnered with experts on the Common Core State Standards to create grade by grade guides that reflect the Common Core State Standards. Individual guides were created for grades K-8 and two were created for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics). Eleven (11) guides were created in all. The National PTA® created these guides for grades K-8 and two for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics).
