3  State-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).  Standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.  College and Career Readiness Skills

4  California adopted CCSS ELA and Math along with 44 other states.  K – 12 ELA ◦ Anchor Standards ◦ Reading: Literature, Informational Text, Foundational Skills ◦ Writing ◦ Listening and Speaking ◦ Language ◦ Range, Quality, and Complexity

8  Two consortiums created to write assessments for CCSS  California chose Smarter Balanced and is a “governing state”  Smarter Balanced is currently piloting technology requirements  Field testing of questions in fall and spring 2013-2014  Current implementation timeline is 2014-2015 school year

9  Grades 3 – 8; 11  Four question types ◦ Selected-response items prompt students to select one or more responses for a set of options. ◦ Technology-enhanced items collect evidence through a non-traditional response type, such as editing text or drawing an object. Selected-response and technology- enhanced items can be scored automatically. ◦ Constructed-response items prompt students to produce a text or numerical response through writing about their knowledge or understanding of a given assessment target. ◦ Performance tasks measure a student’s ability to integrate knowledge and skills across multiple standards—a key component of college and career readiness.
