1 Overview of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects and Mathematics May 8, 2012

2 What are the CCSS? A set of research-based K-12 content standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics 46 states have adopted the CCSS Define what students should know and able to do to prepare them to succeed in college and the workforce Fewer, clearer, higher

3 How Were the CCSS Developed?
Founding Organizations: National Governors Association Center for Best Practices Council of Chief State School Officers (Commissioners) Development Process: Teachers Parents School Administrators Colleges National Education Association National Council of Teachers of Mathematics National Council of Teachers of English National Parent Teacher Association etc.

4 Why Were the CCSS Developed?
Different standards across states Student mobility Global competition Today’s jobs require different skills

5 Key Features of the English Language Arts CCSS
Focus on reading, writing, speaking, listening, language Emphasis on more informational reading and writing (to inform, persuade, explain) Skills related to media use are integrated throughout the standards Text complexity has been raised

6 Standards for English Language Arts Content
Grade Level Domains K – 8 Literature Informational Text Foundational Skills Writing Speaking and Listening Language 6 - 8 Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects Writing in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects

7 Key Features of the Mathematics CCSS
Mathematical Practice and Content Standards Combination of procedure and understanding Mastery of standards through grade 7 prepares students for Algebra in grade 8

8 Standards for Mathematical Content
Grade Level Domains K – 5 Counting and Cardinality Operations and Algebraic Thinking Number and Operations in Base Ten Number and Operations – Fractions Measurement and Data Geometry 6-8 Ratios and Proportional Relationships The Number System Expressions and Equations Functions Statistics and Probability

9 CCSS Vs. NH GLE’s CCSS 7th Grade Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history. No matching GLE NH GLE 8th Grade Understanding, Analysis and Interpretation of Literary Texts/Citing Evidence:  Compare stories and other texts to related personal experience, prior knowledge, or to other books No matching CCSS

10 CCSS Vs. NH GLE’s continued
Grade 6 GLE: Accurately solves problems involving single or multiple operations on fractions (proper, improper, and mixed), or decimals; and addition or subtraction of integers; percent of a whole; or problems involving greatest common factor or least common multiple. Grade 5 CCSS: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.

11 Assessment Transition Timeline
Fall NECAP as usual Fall NECAP (with some math transitional items) Fall Final NECAP (transitional test) Fall 2014 No fall NECAP test Spring 2015 Common Core State Standards Test

12 SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium
One of two multistate consortia awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Education to develop an assessment system based on the CCSS Summative assessments Optional interim assessments On-line, computer adaptive assessments

13 Sample Performance Tasks
Grade 4 Informational Text: Students determine the main idea of Colin A. Ronan’s “Telescopes” and create a summary by explaining how key details support his distinctions regarding different types of telescopes. Grade 8 Performance Task: Simpson Park

14 Next Steps for Hampstead
NH DOE has developed a “State of New Hampshire CCSS Implementation Framework” Hampstead is developing a similar framework
