Common Core State Standards What you need to know Cambrian School District

State Adoptions 45 states, three territories and the District of Columbia California State Board of Education (SBE) - August 2010  Established the Academic Content Standards Commission (ACSC) composed of members appointed by the Governor and the Legislature; the majority were current public school elementary or secondary classroom teachers.  The ACSC was authorized to make recommendations to the SBE to approve or disapprove the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and to supplement those standards with up to 15 percent additional standards.  The ACSC met four times in June and July 2010, and provided its recommendations to the SBE on July 15, 2010. The SBE voted unanimously to adopt the recommendations of the ACSC on August 2, 2010. 2

A Multi-State Led Effort 3

What are the Common Core State Standards? The Common Core State Standards set grade-by-grade learning expectations for students in grades K-12 for Mathematics and for English Language Arts/Literacy. While California has had standards for more than 15 years, this set of standards is more focused on preparing students for success in college and career. They set clear, consistent and high learning goals. 4

What Should I Expect with CCSS? More time to focus on preparing students for college and career readiness. 8

Instructional Shifts in Language Arts  Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational text in addition to literature  Reading and writing grounded in evidence from the text  Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary (words like commit and synthesize)  Writing to inform and structure an argument, not only writing stories 9

Shifts in Language Arts Standards Grade 3 Expectations 1997 Language Arts Standards Common Core Language Arts Standards Reading 1. 6- Use sentence and word context to find the meaning of unknown words. Reading Literature 3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. Language 3.4- Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. 10

How can you help your child in literacy? 1.Ask your child specific questions about what they read. 2.Encourage children to read, then write and speak about nonfiction text: A.Newspapers B.Magazines C.Biographies D.Science 3.Encourage children to research topics of interest and read series that relate to a central topic. 4.Have your child follow step by step instructions or a set of directions in order to accomplish a task, such as building a sandcastle or operating a game.

The Shifts in Mathematics 1.Focus: Focus deeply on concepts prioritized in standards; build strong foundational knowledge. 2.Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics 3.Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

How can you help your child in math? 1.Help children practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. 2.Encourage children not to give up while solving problems, to build stamina and develop their critical thinking skills. Don’t give them the answers - ask them to think of different ways they can solve problems. 3.Have children illustrate the math they were thinking in their head and discuss it out loud. 4.Have children apply their math knowledge to a real- world scenario at home, such as doubling a recipe or calculating the area of a room.

Smarter Balance Assessment A Dramatic Shift

Assessment Two groups working in collaboration to create a Common Core-aligned assessments in English and math: 1.Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) 2.Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) California is a governing member of the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium – 25 states are members of this consortium – Represents 48% of K-12 students in US 22

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Requirements Create more rigorous tests measuring student progress toward “college and career readiness” Have common, comparable scores across member states and across consortia Provide achievement and growth information to help make better educational decisions and professional development opportunities Assess all students except those with “significant cognitive disabilities” Administer assessments online, with timely results 23
