WUSC Fundraising Webinar Campus Engagement Team Presented at Online WUSC Webinar November 11, 2014 Can be used by Local Committees as fundraising reference. Questions can be sent to November 11, 2014

GROUP QUESTION: Why do WUSC Local Committees Fundraise? +To sponsor students +To donate to campaigns they believe in! Shine a Light; Bike for AIDS; Student Refugee Program; Fair Trade… +To send volunteers to the WUSC and CECI International Forum, WUSC Regional Meetings, and other trainings +To create a ‘start-up fund’ for the Local Committee +To pay for office space and other LC expenses +Other?

Fundraising with WUSC Local Committees shouldn’t use their Uniterra Symposia events as a means to raise campaign funds. Take part in one or many of our WUSC and Uniterra campaigns to raise awareness and funds!

GROUP QUESTION: What are barriers and concerns when it comes to fundraising? +“I don’t want to impose” +“What if people say no / aren’t interested? +“What if somebody asks me something I don’t know the answer to?” +“It is rude to ask people for money” +“ That person can’t / won’t donate even if I ask” +“I don’t know where to start! It seems so complicated.” Fundraising can be uplifting and empowering if you are well prepared!

Types of Fundraising

Effective fundraising that is enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved requires motivation! As a Fundraising leader, you should think about: 1.Motivating your team 2.Motivating potential and new supporters 3.Motivating current and long-term supporters What does motivation have to do with fundraising?

1. Motivating Your Team +Volunteers need it to be committed and inspired to fundraise Encourage volunteers to think about why they want to fundraise:  How does it connect to their campus and communities?  Is this an issue that touches them and they are passionate about?  Do they want to learn skills and build their resumes? Learn more about the issue:  Watch movies together (e.g., Girl Rising)  Set aside 5-10 minutes in weekly meetings for volunteers to take turns researching and presenting about an issue  Invite experts, faculty, and community members to give presentations to your Local Committee Make a plan and set goals:  Brainstorm plans, key dates, and delegate responsibilities based on volunteer interests and strengths  Set fundraising targets and identify what these donations will contribute to

2. Motivating Potential & New Supporters +Potential and new supporters need to understand the issue and be inspired to contribute Perfect your pitch!  Consider your audience  Practice and train new volunteers (invite to events, use WUSC taglines, etc.)  Vocabulary (supporter v. donor; contribute v. donate) Stand-out in a crowd  Think about your campus-size and context. What are great events you have attended and why? vs.

3. Motivating Current & Long-Term Supporters +Current and Long-Term Supporters need to be recognized, thanked, and kept informed, to continue contributing Thank you letters / Holiday cards Invitations to Galas, Luncheons, and special events Recognition and shout-outs SRP Thank-you blitzes Send follow-up s / annual updates Invest time into developing a relationship (meetings, coffees, etc.)
