1 Club Leadership Training Membership Session

2 Why is membership important to the University of Kentucky?  Approximately 40% of UK Alumni Association funding comes from members in the form of dues and gifts.  Members help the university with its alumni participation rate, which is an important metric that helps enhance the value of the UK degree.  Members are substantially more likely to become engaged with the university through volunteerism and donations.

3 Why is membership important to the University of Kentucky? Only about 20% of our funding comes from the University of Kentucky! About 40% of UK Alumni Association funding comes from member dues and gifts. MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!

4 Why is membership important at the club level?  To show your loyalty to the University of Kentucky  Member dues support alumni clubs and programs  Set a good example for other alumni that participate in club events

5 Why is membership important at the club level? Contribute to the big pie… So you can have a piece!

6 Clubs in Good Standing  UK Alumni Association’s effort to encourage clubs to increase the number of dues paying members.  It is understood that this is very difficult to do in some areas.  Think of the Clubs in Good Standing document as a way to increase awareness of the importance of membership. Because MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!

8 Clubs in Good Standing Contrary to popular belief you will not be: Bullied Karate Kicked OR

9 Clubs in Good Standing Contrary to popular belief you will not be: Taken to jail OR Kicked out

10 Membership Action Plan You will be asked to submit a Membership Action Plan… A membership action plan is a brief description of what your club plans to do to increase the number of dues paying members.

11 How do you get people to join?  Invite and include.  Add value to membership.  Show appreciation for members.  Know key benefits of UK Alumni Association membership.

12 Invite and Include  Personally invite people to become members of the UK Alumni Association.  Make efforts to include newcomers.  Make people want to be a member of your club.

13 Show appreciation for members at every opportunity! Recognize members at events  Keep it simple: ask members to stand to be recognized at an event, give members special nametags, offer member and nonmember pricing.  Thank members for their membership with the UK Alumni Association at every club gathering.  Offer an inexpensive gift to members who attend events or conduct a raffle for members only.

14 How do I know if someone is a member?  Ask event attendees to show their UK Alumni Membership card and check expiration date.  You may request a list of current members in your area from the UK Alumni Association. (please allow at least 10 days to process your request.)

15 Be prepared to answer the question: Why should I become a member?  Know some of the key benefits of UK Alumni Association membership!  Know all the ways to join the UK Alumni Association.

18 Some Key Benefits  Other Benefits Continued…  Invitations to several fun events with free or reduced admission for members through UK Alumni Clubs and the Association  Game watch gatherings, Derby parties  UK Homecoming, Alumni Weekend, Legacy events  Athletic ticket opportunities  Legacy Initiative Program  This program provides benefits to children of degreed alumni of UK including birthday recognition and eligibility to apply for Legacy Tuition, discounted tuition for out of state students.
