Цель работы: 1. Изучить традиции празднования Рождества в Великобритании 2. Понять значение некоторых символов Рождества 3. Выяснить, где появилась первая Рождественская открытка

Christmas stockings On Christmas Eve children in Britain hang their stockings near the fireplace hoping that Santa Claus will fill them with presents.

Candles People light candles at Christmas as a symbol of Christ’s birth.

Christmas wreaths One of the main traditions during these weeks are Christmas wreaths with candles which have a special meaning. A traditional Christmas wreath is made from evergreen branches to symbolize God's ever-lasting presence. In the wreath there are four candles – three purple candles that represent penance and one pink one to represent the hope of the coming joy. Each candle represents one of the four weeks before Christmas. During the week of Christmas, the candles are changed to white to represent the fulfillment of the miracle of the birth of the Christ child.

Christmas tree for birds People try to share their joy with other live creatures. On Christmas Eve they feed birds with seeds and bread crumbs. It symbolizes that the New year will bring luck and wealth. The holiday out-of-doors adds fun to the holiday indoors.

In 1840 Sir Henry Coal invented for his numerous relatives an original greeting - а Christmas postcard made of cardboard. This postcard had a tremendous success. About a thousand copies were printed and sold. Since 1860 the production of postcards has become a real business.

Lunch is the most important part of Christmas Day. The traditional lunch consists of roast turkey with vegetables, followed by Christmas (plum) pudding made with dried fruit and brandy.

Caroling Christmas carols are special songs which are sung during the Christmas season. The songs are about Jesus and the time when he was born. Carol singing, or Caroling, is singing carols in the street or public places. It is one of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars, seeking food, money, or drink, would wander the streets singing holiday songs.
