Leadership Skills Lunch and Learn Public Speaking August 2014

Workshop Objectives Participants will: Build confidence in speaking publicly Practice body language and vocal delivery Practice giving an impromptu speech using the “5 Magic Phrases” technique

Vocal Delivery Volume – loud or quiet Pitch – high or low sounding Pace – speaking quickly or slowly Tone – the mood set by your voice (e.g. light- hearted and cheerful, or solemn and somber)

Body Language Posture – Aligned, natural arms and hands Gestures – Use for emphasis Movement – Move naturally, avoid standing stock still, walk around a bit Facial Expressions – appropriate to the occasion, don’t “freeze” in one expression Eye Contact – brief eye contact with many people; don’t fixate, don’t look past people

Purpose of the Speech Thinking – What is the most important thing you want the audience to think about? Feelings – What is the most important thing you want the audience to feel? Actions – What do you want the audience to do?

5 Magic Phrases for Impromptu Speeches Greeting State the event Establish common ground Who are you and why are you speaking? Call for action

5 Magic Phrase: Lead-in Lines “Good…” (morning; afternoon) “As we all know…” (we’re here to…) “We all…” (are aware of the situation…) “I’ve…” (learned so much from Mary…) “So let’s all…” (raise a toast; support the motion; etc.)
