Presentation transcript:

Definition: A Sanitation System A full sanitation system is composed of the users of the system, the collection, transport, treatment and end management of human excreta, greywater, stormwater, industrial wastewater and solid waste. Photos: P. Ekblom

Definition: Sustainable Sanitation Sustainable sanitation systems protect and promote human health, minimise environmental degradation and depletion of the resource base, are technically and institutionally appropriate, socially acceptable and economically viable in the long term

Definition: Ecological Sanitation Ecological sanitation systems safely recycle plant nutrients in human excreta to crop production in such a way that the use of non- renewable resources is minimised Photos: Dr Rodda. Work by D. Starzak, Univ ofKwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Consideration and focus for EcoSanRes Consideration: Ecological sanitation systems have the potential to contribute significantly towards achieving sustainable sanitation. However ecological sanitation projects are not always sustainable for reasons relating to technology, finance, institutions, socio-economics or political economy. Focus: EcoSanRes 2 has one focus on understanding how ecological sanitation projects can be designed so that they achieve sustainable sanitation.

This workshop, how does that fit into everything? Sanitation planning is a starting point and key in sanitation implementation... an entry point into the mainstream of the sector SoundSound sanitation planning should improve the decision- making process... increase the diversity of sanitation systems implemented... ”A good planner works out what is doable at a certain time in a certain context” (B. Evans) Photos: E. Kvarnström

...but planning alone is not enough... Human element C8/RuHhc0rICQI/AAAAAAAAADI/ArIrFz6d8IU/s400/simpsonize_fre drikReinfeldt.jpg&imgrefurl= mpsonisera- mig.html&h=314&w=306&sz=12&hl=sv&start=15&usg=__bUimxnRkW bKbqh0- rOupzVocNvg=&tbnid=nL_oO1g7Kc4EcM:&tbnh=117&tbnw=114&prev =/images%3Fq%3Dfredrik%2Breinfeldt%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Dsv Photo: P. ...what if...? What if we did the planning right? What if we managed the human element? What if we solved technical problems?...would that lead to sustained sanitation solutions?? Drawing by Jan Wijkmark, VERNA

Objectives of this workshop Bring together some dotorg, high-minders in sanitation interventions for... –Identification of strengths/weaknesses for different planning and intervention methods for a peri-urban setting with a sustainability focus –Identification and understanding of different socio- political factors and conditions that seriously inhibits or enhances collective-active participation of peri- urban slum communities in achieving the ‘public good’ –Suggestions of improvements in approaches for peri- urban settings –Way forwards towards sustainability –How do we share this knowledge?
