What do we have to do for the SAC? Construct 3 pieces of writing (300 – 400 words each) Fill in a proforma for each piece (written explanation notes) Each piece must be in a different format – expository, persuasive and imaginative. Write a written explanation to explain your choices and how you have reflected key aspects of Skin (the studied text)

What types of writing can I choose? Expository – essay; news article, a feature article… Persuasive – essay; editorial; dialogue between holders of different viewpoints, speech… Imaginative – a narrative; play script; letter… ALWAYS REMEMBER: PURPOSE AUDIENCE FORM What? PROMPTS We rarely see ourselves as others see us. We conform to stereotypes more than we think. As we journey through life, identity and belonging must be continually renegotiated. In order to have an identity, one must first belong to a group.

Scrapbook of Ideas Why is this useful? What could it include? Remember you are using Skin as the source of your ideas and exploration of identity and belonging.

Things to remember… When writing the three pieces: You need to show the key ideas of Skin, not make direct references to the text or retell the plot of the film in a different way. You need to use Skin as a source for your conceptual ideas. When writing the reflection on each piece and then as a whole: Think about elements, experiences, events, relationships and situations in your text that reveal key aspects of the studied text. Examples: Check out your Red Text pages 242 – 261 for example texts and reflections.

Key Terms to Understand Afrikaners A term used to relate to all white Afrikaaner speaking people. Afrikaners were mostly descended from the early Dutch settlers in South Africa who began arriving in the middle of the seventeenth century. (1650s) The predominant religion was Protestantism which was also known as the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa. It is important to know that the beliefs of Protestantism directly supports the beliefs that blacks are inferior to whites. Apartheid Apartheid literally means apartness. It is a system of government and living that began in 1948 that was started by Afrikaner nationalists. It is a way of living that completely separates the whites from the blacks. The country was zoned up into all black and/or all white areas. Schools are separated and resources are limited for blacks. The Afrikaner population is only a minority – about 15%- yet it has all the power and is in government. Whites White individuals who enjoyed all the rights and privileges. Blacks The majority of citizens in South Africa were/are black. Coloured Are seen as mixed and was used to refer to Asians and other dark people Segregation Forced separation of whites and blacks Baaskap A belief in White supremacy – whites are superior to all other races
