Unit 2.1Lessons from the gospels Unit 2.1Lessons from the gospels The ultimate leadership role model Passing the baton to a new generation of leaders

Can you identify some people who made an impact on your life? In what ways did they impress you? To what extent have you incorporated the qualities you admired into your own life?

ParentTeacherMissionary Bible class leader Footballer?MusicianCelebrity?

What did Jesus know about himself? Jesus was quite clear about his relationship with the Father and why he had come into the world. Can you think of any other passages where Jesus speaks of this relationship or purpose. What does the passage say about Jesus’ love? In what way is the feet washing a demonstration of Jesus’ love? Can you think of other passages where Jesus shows his love for the disciples. What are the implications of this for Christian leadership? List at least three lessons

Jesus knew he had come from God. Jesus knew that his time had come. Jesus loved his disciples completely and unconditionally. Washing the feet shows that he was prepared to do anything on their behalf. His love is also shown by His protection of them when the soldiers came to arrest him. The incident shows that Christian leadership is exactly the opposite of worldly leadership. It is about love, service and sacrifice.

JESUS LEADERSHIP MODEL Jesus knew Jesus loved Jesus served

THE CHALLENGE Who am I working for? Who am I trying to please? Do I have the heart of a servant leader?

Assignment 3 Personal Mission Statement “I want to be more like Jesus today. In every situation I will ask two questions: What would Jesus do? What would Jesus say? And seek to respond accordingly.”

Organise your time aroundyourpriorities

You (not someone else) must determine the balance between conflicting demands. You must give time to your priorities

If you don’t timetable it - it will not happen

‘ Private victories precede public victories.’ Quotable Quotes Steven Covey The Devil Martin Luther Steven Covey ‘If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem’ ‘You can’t talk your way out of problems you behave yourself into’. ‘I have so many things to do today, I must get up two hours earlier to pray’. You have so many things to do today. Give yourself a break – cut back on your prayer time.’ ‘ You have so many things to do today. Give yourself a break – cut back on your prayer time.’

Quotable Quotes If my private world is in order, it will be because I am convinced that the inner world of the spiritual must govern the outer world of activity. Beware of the barrenness of a busy life. If my private world is in order, it will be because I make a daily choice to monitor its state of orderliness. Gordon McDonald

Time for Reflection Have you settled on who you are trying to please? Have you identified your priorities? Are you managing your time according to your priorities?

Building up a picture (2) A Christian leader must be a godly person The leader’s confidence comes from God to whom he gives ultimate allegiance The Biblical model is servant leadership A Christian leader organises his time around his priorities
