1) Facts and Figures What is interesting about Sydney? Australia´s oldest city Blessed with natural attractions Both exists: High culture and gaudy nightlife  everyone is attracted Has heavenly beaches

1) Facts and Figures Some data about Sydney: Area: 1,735 sq km Population: 4 Million Summer temperatures: 25 to 40 °C Airport:10 km south of the city centre

2) History How everything started: First humans came from across the sea to Sydney, between and years ago, from Southeast Asia Nomadic tribes spread across the country  there were 3 main tribes in Sydney, who all possessed their own language The tribes had a sophisticated culture (religion, law, art etc.)

2) History The 18th Century – a Milestone of Australian History: Arrival of the British in the 18th century British refused to recognise the Aboriginal people´s legal rights to the land 1788: Convicts were carried to Australia from Britain´s overcrowded jails; military personnel also came to Australia  The settlers established themselves at Sydney Cove  The city of Sydney grew

2) History The following years: More and more settlers came but Gold was discovered to Sydney´s west in the 1850´s  The settlers searched wealth and therefore left Sydney  Sydney´s importance diminished dramatically

2) History Younger developments: Australia´s states achieved federation on the 1st of January 1901 New South Wales became a state of Australia and Sydney its capital Economy boomed when the Great Depression hit  in 1931 around a third of Sydney´s workers were unemployed But: in 1932 the wool prices rose  Sydney regained it‘s importance Sydney suffered little during the two world wars It was host of the 2000 Olympic Games  Renovation took place

3) Geography Attractions: Bondi Beach The „grande dame“ of Sydney´s beaches with many designer cafés, shops and fashion stores Circular Quay Was the shipping centre of Sydney for many years; today: a commuting hub and a recreational space (with a railway station, ferry quays, restaurants, parks and the Sydney Opera House etc.)

4) Music Folk Australian folk originates from the English immigrants coming to Australia (mainly from Ireland and Scotland) The best known example: „Waltzing Matilda“; tells us about a jolly swagman who is caught by the police and commits suicide

Some of them met at the Sydney Writers´Festival (May 24th, 2004):  held anually mid-May celebrating local and international authors and poets e.g. at Sydney Theatre  Authors 2004: Harvey Pekar, Michael Leunig, Alain de Button and David Sedaris etc. (250 writers at 175 events)
