Monday – Dec. 8 Bell Ringer: What are some reasons you think people would want to come to Texas in the mid-1800’s?

Annexation of Texas (1845) fdfgr fggbfyg Many people in the northern US were opposed to annexation because of fear of war with Mexico and they were opposed to adding another slave state. But after American-Mexican War, as a state, Texas appeared to be a safer place to live, so the number of immigrants going to Texas greatly increase. The early statehood period was a time of large growth in population as people migrated to Texas. “Gone to Texas” or “G.T.T.” became a common phrase. See the cartoon on page 261 – Why is the wealthy man angry?

Recruiting Poster Make a recruiting poster to encourage people from a particular part of the US or specific other country to move to Texas. Include: 1.Why they should move to Texas? What benefit will they get? 2.Where they should move in Texas? 3.What will life be like for them in Texas?

Thursday – Dec. 11 Bell Ringer – What do you think this picture is about? How would you describe it? What do you notice? (look closely). It’s called “American Progress”, painted by John Gast in 1872.

Unit 7 – High-Level Review Some people in US were reluctant to annex Texas due to fear of war with Mexico and the expansion of slavery. Most Texans supported annexation as a way to clear-up the government’s debt and for protection against Mexico. Tejanos and African Americans were concerned about annexation. They feared loss of liberty. (Tejanos worried about loss of contact with Mexico; African Americans with being a slave state in a country that accepted it) Texas joins the US in 1845 Mexican-American War ( )– US won, ended by Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. US paid $15M and received a large piece of land from Mexico Mexico agreed that Texas was a part of the US Mexico agreed that the Rio Grande River was the southern border of Texas

Unit 7 – High-Level Review (continued) Immigration to Texas increased and the population greatly expanded after Texas became a state. Many people from Europe came to Texas, including many people from Germany who typically settled in central Texas Compromise of 1850 – Texas received $10M to give up its claim to land in New Mexico. California was admitted to the Union as a free state.
